US horror director Tobe Hooper, best known for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Poltergeist & Salem’s Lot, has died aged 74.
He died on Saturday in California of natural causes, according to media reports.
In 1974 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was shot for less than $US300,000. Despite being banned in several countries it was one of the most profitable independent films of the 1970s. A sequel was later spawned.
1982’s Poltergeist became the eighth-highest grossing film of the year. His other film credits included Toolbox Murders, Mortuary, Deathtrap, The Fun House, Invaders from Mars, Night Terrors and Djinn.
TV credits included the 1979 telemovie Salem’s Lot, Amazing Stories, The Equalizer, Freddie’s Nightmares, Tales from the Crypt, Nowhere Man, Dark Skies, Prey, Night Visions, Taken and Masters of Horror.

For me he will always be the man who directed Lifeforce (1986) – one of the most insane yet enjoyable things ever put on film, a mix of science fiction/vampire/zombie/apocalypse film.
