2016 Doctor Who spin-off Class has been axed after just one season.

The modern day drama based at Coal Hill School, attempted to extend the brand with a younger audience.

BBC3 controller Damian Kavanagh told RadioTimes.com the drama, written by Young Adult author Patrick Ness, would not be proceeding.

“There was nothing wrong with it. I thought Patrick did a great job, he explored an amazing world. In honesty it didn’t really land for us on BBC3; some shows don’t and I have to make decisions about what we’re going to do from a drama point of view, and what we did after Class was Clique which worked really well for us.”

Class aired in Australia on ABC2.

  1. Class never had a hope. Little to no connection to the parent show. Muddled concept that could’t decided if it was for young adults or for a much older audience. Premiered on BBC3 (a non-broadcast, internet based channel with a limited audience) and then giving it a second broadcast on TV 6 months later in a late night weekday slot. Worst of all, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffatt kept calling it a “British ripoff of Buffy” (he genuinely thought that was a positive thing) during all the press interviews leading up to the premiere. Ultimately, it was the spinoff no one asked for designed to fill in while Doctor Who was off air for a year.

  3. I understand that. I found it just as bad as the Peter Capaldi and Matt Smith Dr Whos, both of which I stopped watching.

    I hope Jodie Whittaker brings Dr Who back to the glory days of David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston.
