A Place to Call Home star David Berry last night made his debut appearance in Outlander.

Berry guests as Lord John Grey, who was just a boy when he first met Jamie at Culloden.

His character is described as “a steadfast and honourable British subject, torn between a finely-honed sense of familial duty and a strong moral compass of right and wrong.  He is boyishly handsome with an upper class rearing — the consummate gentleman.  However, a scandal from his past has relegated Lord John to an undesirable position as governor of a desolate prison in Northern Scotland and an unrequited love makes him a prisoner of his own passion.”

Berry returns next week.

Meanwhile this season, which was the top-rated show across Pay TV last night, has been bumping off its principals at a galloping rate. Last night saw Claire’s husband Frank (Tobias Menzies) killed in a car accident in the 1960s. That effectively leaves Claire (Catriona Balfe) to resume with Jamie (Sam Heughan) if only she can find a way back to the past.

This presumably means no more appearances by Tobias Menzies after Black Jack Randall was killed off in the first episode.

This week’s episode was also directed by Aussie Brendan Maher whose credits go back to Cop Shop, Prisoner and The Flying Doctors.

  1. I am amazed at how little publicity and profile this show has in Australia – given that it now includes David Berry who will have an ongoing role both in this and future seasons and has included a lot of Aussies as writers and crew. This is a massive show in the US and won Monday’s pay tv ratings here but…..?
