New HBO drama The Deuce has been renewed for a second season just a week after its premiere.

The period drama starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal chronicles the rise of the porn culture in New York from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s.

“We are thrilled to continue our creative collaboration with master storytellers David Simon and George Pelecanos,” said Casey Bloys, president HBO programming. “Their unique gift for immersing the audience in their dark and edgy worlds brings a brilliant verisimilitude unlike any other. With the remarkably talented Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco leading an exceptional cast, we look forward to delving deeper as this captivating story evolves.”

David Simon said, “Everyone involved with this project is genuinely grateful to HBO for the chance to take the narrative where it needs to go. We knew the theme and purpose of the story, but there are many people in the entertainment industry who might not have it told — or worse, would have told it for the wrong reasons. HBO is a serious outfit. And they don’t scare.”

The early renewal follows 2.2 million US viewers across all HBO platforms for its premiere, on par with The Night Of, although with Game of Thrones nearing it run, and Vinyl already discontinued, Westworld would have remained its only other flagship drama.

The Deuce , which has had good reviews, is being fast-tracked in Australia on Showcase but is yet to crack the Top 20 STV numbers across its two Monday playouts.

  1. The HBO show is based on the book Take Her To The Dark Side, The Things a Woman’s Body Was Made For. I am surprised they do not put it in the credits. The book was written in 1970 and republished several times, all the characters are the same.The novel is more graphic as it is xxx rated and HBO can only go so far with that. Pretty cool show though, I will continue to watch it. The book was republished on Amazon in time for the shows release.

  2. The Deuce will need a bit of notoriety or shock value to attract a better audience in Australia, but some potential must be anticipated for this show in the market where it counts most, the USA. Finding absolute Worldwide ratings winners like GoT are rare, audiences should enjoy them when they can.
