The Bachelorette sets new record in catch-up viewing

Sophie Monk is officially bigger than Game of Thrones.

The second episode of TEN’s Bachelorette has broken the record for the highest seven-day online catch-up audience in Australia.

The 21st September episode attracted an additional 179,000 viewers, eclipsing the previous record held by Game of Thrones at 176,000 viewers.

It lifted the episode’s total seven-day capital-city consolidated audience to 1.27 million, covering television and online viewing.

The premiere episode also ranks as the #3 biggest catch-up in 7 day viewing at 170,000 viewers. This reiterates that TEN has a hit on its hands in Sophie Monk, also topping the demos on both Wednesday & Thursday nights this week.

TEN Chief Content Officer, Beverley McGarvey, said: “After just four episodes, The Bachelorette Australia with Sophie Monk is a major success on all screens.

“The show’s overnight television audience alone is up 44% in total people compared with the first four episodes last year and it ranks #1 in its timeslot in total people, 25 to 54s and under 55s. It dominates social media conversations and engagement every time it is on air.

The Bachelorette Australia’s online catch-up viewing on tenplay this year has been extraordinary. So far, the average online catch-up viewing per episode has soared more than 160% compared with 2016. Australia has fallen in love with Sophie Monk and the Bachelors, regardless of what screen they are watching them on,” she said.

  1. I am more surprised that Pepper Pig is 4th on the list. What, are all these kids out doing their compulsory extra-curricular study. Then then come home, take off the tie, crack open a V and sit down to catch up on Pepper Pig. Is that how it works for young kids today?

  2. Is an online view actually mean someone has watched the full episode? Or is it video starts? I recall some confusion on this when the VPM ratings were introduced.

    1. Yes an awful lot of people do stream The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. A guilty pleasure watched on the privacy of your own tablet perhaps. It is the total minutes of viewing equal to 179,000 full viewings (rounded to the nearest thousand viewings). With improvements in server bandwidth and networks the number of stream starts per equivalent viewing has dropped from 3-4 to around 2.

    1. That’s a shame. I am not a fan of these dating reality shows, but Sophie Monk is such a lovely, kind hearted person who doesn’t take herself too seriously. I assume catch up has happened as positive word has spread.
