Airdate: George Michael: Freedom

Updated: New UK music special on former Wham! singer will screen on Nine.

Next week The Block will screen Sunday – Thursday leaving Nine to schedule the music special George Michael: Freedom on Wednesday.

This is a Channel 4 doco by filmmaker and close friend, David Austin, which is airing in the UK this week.

After leaving Wham! in 1990, George Michael was one of the biggest music stars in the world. This film revisits the start of his solo career; the legal battles and personal struggles he endured, as told by George Michael himself.

Updated: It will be followed by a George Michael Live in London concert at 10:30pm.

George Michael: Freedom covers the span of his entire career but concentrates on the formative period in the late Grammy Award winner’s life and career, leading up to and following the making of his acclaimed, best-selling album “Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1” and his subsequent, infamous High Court battle with his record label that followed, while also becoming poignantly personal about the death of his late partner and first love, Anselmo Feleppa.

Filmed before Michael’s untimely passing, the documentary is narrated by the singer, who was heavily involved in the making of the film that serves as his final work.

George Michael: Freedom features George’s incredible, unseen archival and private home-footage, giving viewers a first-person account of this dramatic period in his life.

The feature documentary includes the original five supermodels from Oscar-nominated directorDavid Fincher’s “Freedom!” video who come together for the first time to discuss their experience on the iconic music video. The film also features interviews with some of Michaels’ most famous friends and music legends, including Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Ricky Gervais, Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Tracey Emin, Liam Gallagher, Mary J. Blige, Jean- Paul Gaultier, James Corden and Tony Bennett.

Produced by Sony Music Entertainment UK and commissioned by Jonny Rothery, George Michael: Freedom was directed by George Michael and David Austin, produced by Lisa Johnson and David Austin. David Austin also serves as executive producer.

8:30pm Wednesday October 25 on Nine.
