Amazon abandons $160m Weinstein drama with Robert de Niro

But new Matthew Weiner drama The Romanoffs to proceed without TWC.

Amazon Studios has abandoned plans to proceed with a big budget drama starring Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore, following revelations surrounding Harvey Weinstein.

The untitled $160m production by writer / producer David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook), had not yet started production.

In a statement, David O. Russell, Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore said, “We support Amazon’s decision as In light of recent news and out of respect for all those affected we have decided together that it is best to not move forward with this show.”

Meanwhile The Romanoffs, by writer Matthew Weiner (Mad Men), will proceed for Amazon but without the involvement of The Weinstein Company.

The first four episodes have been filmed, with Christina Hendricks and John Slattery.

Last week Amazon suspended Roy Price, vice-president of Amazon Studios and global head of Prime Video content, following a harassment claim by Isa Hackett, a producer on Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle and Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams.

  1. The American film and entertainment industry seem to have shot themselves in the foot dealing with Weinstein a man who has a long history in the business and must have been well known for his personal behaviour, plainly Hollywood which has a long history of sexual abuse going back many decades is in self protection mode as Weinstein cannot be the sole perpetrator, others must be very concerned for their future.
