Anh Do has won the Archibald Prize People’s Choice Award for his portrait of actor and Indigenous activist Jack Charles.
The $3,500 cash prize was announced at the Art Gallery of NSW today.
Do said he first heard of Charles in a newspaper article that introduced him as “esteemed actor, former heroin addict and jailbird, member of the Stolen Generations, gay man and latter-day Indigenous activist”.
He painted Charles for Anh Do’s Brush With Fame, but notes, “…this isn’t the one I did on the TV show — I used that as a study then I went home and spent a bit more time on this one, probably two days.
“Jack has lived a big life and I enjoyed getting to know him and painting his portrait immensely.”
In July, Mitch Cairns won the Archibald Prize for his portrait of his partner and fellow artist Agatha Gothe-Snape.
Art series The Archibald is currently screening on Foxtel Arts.

ABC will replay episode with Jack Charles at 10pm Friday.
Well deserved.
On Brush With Fame, Anh doesn’t always get it quite right but when he does, his paintings are amazing.
This one in particular is brilliant and beautifully crafted – the likeness to Jack is uncanny.
Couldn’t agree more Angela
Remember the episode and I recall thinking “this is so much better than saying ‘sorry’.”
