Amazon in talks for Lord of the Rings series

Warner Bros. & estate of J.R.R. Tolkien are shopping a series, but no deal has been done.

A small screen adaptation of The Lord of the Rings is reportedly under discussion with Amazon.

Variety reports Warner Bros. Television and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien are in talks to develop a series based on the classic novels.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is said by sources with knowledge of the situation to be personally involved in the negotiations, which are still in very early stages. No deal has been set.

Amazon recently indicated it wants its own Game of Thrones, flagging a shift from niche, naturalistic series to large-scale genre programming with broad international appeal.

Last month Amazon lost several high-ranking execs including president Roy Price, head of scripted Joe Lewis, and head of unscripted Conrad Riggs all departing. CEO Jeff Bezos is known to be a fan of high fantasy and science fiction.

Representatives for Amazon and Warner Bros. declined to comment.

  1. Peter Jackson’s epic production of Lord of the Rings really cant be bettered so unless some original re-imagining of the classic tale and it’s characters is in proposition Amazon will just be competing its big budget ambitions with Netflix, the obvious publicity war of spending billions by the major streaming companies should be a bit concerning to fans of both Netflix and Amazon as the only result of all this borrowed money will be exponential price increases, its possible viewers who could start looking elsewhere if the eventual products don’t match the expectation.
