Bumper Sunday for ABC

Ratings: Drama doctors push ABC's primary channel to the top of the heap on Sunday.

ABC’s primary channel was the most-viewed channel last night, landing ahead of the commercial competition once more.

Drama doctors won key timeslots, albeit boosted by older viewers.

The Wall may have been winning from 7pm with 669,000 viewers but it was soon eclipsed once Doc Martin began around 7:40pm with 978,000 as the night’s top show. Family Food Fight, Bull and Secrets of the Pyramids followed.

Around 8:30pm, the last-ever Doctor Blake Mysteries on ABC finally law Lucien & Jean wed, as well as a major character bumped off. It wrapped to the tune of 891,000 ahead of 60 Minutes on 667,000. Seven staggered its programming but the Craig McLachlan-led drama still beat both Sunday Night and a Star Wars movie, while TEN trailed well behind.

Seven News won the 6pm battle against Nine however Nine News topped the demos.

Although ABC’s primary channel topped the night Seven network won overall with 30.8% then Nine 25.6%, ABC 25.3%, TEN 12.1% and SBS 6.3%.

Seven News  was best for Seven with 901,000 then The Wall (669,000), Sunday Night (589,000) and movie: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (416,000).

Nine News (862,000) led for Nine then 60 Minutes (667,000), Family Food Fight (570,000) and Australian Crime Stories (346,000).

Doc Martin was #1 with 978,000 for ABC followed by The Doctor Blake Mysteries (891,000) and ABC News (858,000). Classic Countdown drew 210,000.

The Sunday Project (345,000 / 216,000) was best for TEN then Bull (269,000), Wisdom of the Crowd (255,000), TEN Eyewitness News (266,000), NCIS: New Orleans (195,000 / 128,000) and Family Feud (184,000).

On SBS it was Secrets of the Pyramids (243,000), SBS World News (145,000) and The Nineties (142,000).

7TWO’s Border Security topped multichannels with 193,000.

  2. I’m hoping this is the lineup they will settle on for Sunday Project. Great having Hamish back on local Tv and Tommy is a really good fit. Chris Bath brings the newsworthiness too. Rest enjoying it at the moment.

  3. Just news and Classic Countdown was all that FTA got out of me last night. Already seen Star Wars, and wouldn’t wait for TV anyway.

    Now Countdown is up to 1983 – when I really started getting into music, its amazing how much they don’t show but I guess there is only so much they can do in an hour. Am loving CCD, only criticism I would have is that it would have been good to end each show with the top 10 of each year, not just a selection of the number 1’s (each ep they only show a few, some big #1’s have been missing so far!)

  4. I wonder how low the numbers will go over the next few weeks when there is no sport on and viewers flock to streaming services. The only thing we watched all weekend on fta was Graham Norton on catch-up, nothing else…

  5. With Doctor Blake this week and last week killing off his major antagonists that became mutually respected collegues/friends and the doctors personal stuff with his father, not to mention the wedding, it felt like a natural conclusion. Will this mean an anti climax for the seven series?

  6. Well done to the ABC, thoroughly deserved, loved Doctor Blake and hope Seven keep it true next year. If only the ABC had strong multi-channels…

    Surely Seven will repeat the Star Wars movies on multi-channels over summer or early next year? To re-coup some ordinary ratings, for the much promoted and no doubt clostly marathon?

    2. I don’t consider the airing of the SW movies to be a marathon, and I don’t follow why this would’ve been costly, 3 over 30 year old films, 3 over 12 year old films and a recent film that Seven got the rights to in the usual time it takes for films to be on FTA after being in theatres.
