Lord of the Rings series confirmed for Amazon

It’s official: Amazon Studios is going to make a Lord of the Rings TV series (good luck with that).

Amazon has acquired global television rights to the franchise, based on the best-selling novels by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Amazon has handed out a multiple-season commitment but a writer has not yet been attached. The series will explore new storylines preceding The Fellowship of the Ring and the deal includes a potential additional spinoff series.

The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Amazon’s new head of scripted. “We are honoured to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

  1. A Middle Earth series then. Preceding the Fellowship of The Ring is The Hobbit. Preceding that would be the early lives of the immortals who appear in those two. Preceding that is the mythology that Tolkien wrote covering creation up to the 3rd Age, and which exists in multiple versions. There will be a continuous series of press releases between now and when it actually airs, some of which may contain details.
