It’s official: Amazon Studios is going to make a Lord of the Rings TV series (good luck with that).
Amazon has acquired global television rights to the franchise, based on the best-selling novels by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Amazon has handed out a multiple-season commitment but a writer has not yet been attached. The series will explore new storylines preceding The Fellowship of the Ring and the deal includes a potential additional spinoff series.
“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Amazon’s new head of scripted. “We are honoured to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”
