New ABC quiz for 6pm

Exclusive: Get out your trivia teams for a new ABC show in 2018.

EXCLUSIVE: ABC will have a new Quiz show next year.

The unnamed show, to be produced by ITV Studios Australia, is set for a 6pm timeslot and surrounds pub trivia.

Tipped to run for an hour each weeknight, TV Tonight understands the show will also break the mould on its hosting role.

Whether that means a female host or not, is unclear, but quiz shows have generally been slow to embrace female hosts…. Julia Zemiro (RocKwiz), Cornelia Frances (The Weakest Link) and Kerri-Anne Kennerley (Greed) amongst the few on Australian TV.

The 6pm slot, currently home to Family Feud on TEN, was also the home of SBS quiz Letters & Numbers and remains an opportunity for the broadcaster which underperforms against news bulletins on Seven & Nine.

ITV Studios has proven successes with The Chase for Seven, while Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation is returning for Nine as first revealed here.

ABC declined to comment.

  1. Putting 2 and 2 together from the audition ad in your links could it be Tenable, broadcast by ITV in the UK and hosted by Warrick Davies. If he hosts the Aussie version that ticks the “break the mould” box and compiling lists of ten is very much “pub trivia”.

Only thing is it’s made by Endemol rather than ITV in the UK, but that’s not to say they aren’t producing it in Australia.

    1. ABC’s main channel has never had a weeknight news at 6.00. Why would they start now especially when they already have an early news at 5.00pm, plus there’s ABC News 24 around the clock and then the main bulletin at 7.00.

And with 7 and 9 both having their news at 6.00, and SBS from 6.30, there are probably enough options for news during that hour. Plus there’s Sky News for anyone so inclined.

ABC providing an alternative at 6.00pm is a good thing and it’s nice to see them put some investment into that timeslot, although I agree with an earlier comment that an hour might be a tough ask but I suppose Hot Seat & The Chase are doing it.

      1. Actually, sorry just to clarify my earlier comment. ABC did actually try a “World News” bulletin at 6.00 many years ago, as a competitor to SBS World News at 6.30. It didn’t catch on and had a short life.

  2. 5 hours of pub quiz per week is an awful lot! Hope it works out well for them.
If they could get Kitty Flanagan to host it, I’d watch it every night.
