Returning: Vikings

Sprawling Irish / Canadian saga is back on SBS next month, a week after its US return.

Season five of sprawling Irish / Canadian saga Vikings will debut on SBS next month.

The first 10 episodes begins  with a double episode on December 6, before settling into single episodes a week later. This will debut just shy of a week after its US return.

SBS Channel Manager, Ben Nguyen, said: “For years, SBS has brought Australian viewers the momentous, historically-inspired adventures of Vikings, and we’re thrilled to yet again be the first to bring the new season of Vikings to Australia for all fans to enjoy.”

Vikings was recently renewed for a 20-episode sixth season expected in late 2018.

Season 5A stars series favourites Katheryn Winnick as Queen Lagertha, Gustaf Skarsgård as Floki, Alex Høgh Andersen as Ivar the Boneless, Alexander Ludwig as Bjorn, Australian actor Jordan Smith as Ubbe, Marco Ilso as Hvitserk – and marks the return of Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors), who joined in season 4B as Bishop Heahmund.

This season begins with Ivar the Boneless asserting his leadership over the Great Heathen Army, while Lagertha reigns as Queen of Kattegat. Ivar’s murder of his brother Sigurd sets the stage for vicious battles to come as Ragnar’s sons plot their next moves after avenging their father’s death. Bjorn follows his destiny into the Mediterranean Sea and Floki who is suffering from the loss of his wife Helga, takes to the seas submitting himself to the will of the Gods. This season is full of startling alliances and unbelievable betrayals as the Vikings fight to rule the world.

Vikings is the critically acclaimed series from creator and writer Michael Hirst (Academy-Award winning Elizabeth, Emmy, Golden Globe nominated The Tudors), and has been a huge international triumph, remaining a top-ten cable scripted drama in the U.S.

Wednesday 6 December at 9.30pm on SBS.

    1. The make-believe “non-ratings” period (during which ratings are still recorded and reported as usual) is only relevant with regard to who wins the ratings battle each calendar year. I have a suspicion that SBS aren’t too fussed about whether Seven or Nine claims that bragging right.

The more eyeballs that SBS can offer to advertisers, the more that they can charge. This is true at any time of the year.

I recall writing a comment on last November’s “returning” notice that, due to the lack of much decent content on FTA, I would prefer that SBS ran Vikings a week after the US instead of waiting until January. So I am happy that they have been able to do that this time around.
