Michael Green and Bryan Fuller, creators of Starz’s American Gods, have exited the Amazon series.
The duo adapted Neil Gaiman’s novel and served as executive producers / showrunners. While no reason has been forthcoming, there is speculation the split may have been over budget. There had been talk that the budget for first season had ballooned to Game of Thrones-levels. But producers FremantleMedia North America, under new scripted chief Dante di Loreto, tried to impose big budget cuts for the second season.
More than half of the scripts are reportedly completed for Season 2, which has been targeting a mid-2018 premiere. Gaiman may come on board as a co-showrunner but he already has his hands full with Good Omens for Amazon.
Neither Starz nor FremantleMedia North America responded to request for comment, according to Deadline.

Without having read any of the novels which the show is based the need for all the expensive CGI is debatable, shows like Supernatural and Dark Mirror have had long runs and have stylised the supernatural horror content to presumably keep to budget, my suspicion watching American Gods is the producers just wanted to disguise the soft porn and homoerotic imagery as being screened with colourful artistic license instead of in your face.
Watched a couple of episodes on Qantas’ in-flight streaming service and while it’s not enormous in scale like GOT it has gorgeous production design. Had me hooked.
