The Nineties: Nov 12

This Sunday it's the music of a decade plus the Clinton era.

This Sunday on The Nineties, it’s the music of a decade plus US politics, and the Clinton era.

Repeat after me… “I did not have sexual relations with that woman….”

Episode Three: Music (8.30pm)
The 1990s was a decade of great musical diversity. Grunge, alternative and indie rock were dominant. The focus of hip hop migrated west with gangsta rap. Country music exploded commercially as artists like Garth Brooks and Shania Twain began selling out stadiums. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Oasis and the Foo Fighters were among the most influential rock bands. Alanis Morrissette, Sheryl Crow and Lauryn Hill displayed their unique voices in song writing and performance. Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Notorious B.I.G. and others elevated hip-hop to perhaps the most influential genre of them all.

Episode Four: Clinton Era (9.25pm)
Bill Clinton’s presidency got off to a rocky start. His inability to reform America’s health care system led to the Republicans gaining control of both houses of Congress for the first time in decades. President Clinton faced military disaster in Somalia, genocide in Rwanda and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia. But as he always seemed to do, Clinton rebounded and was decisively re-elected in 1996. Just as the nation seemed to be settling into a period of genuine peace and prosperity the President was ensnared in a sex scandal with a White House intern leading to impeachment and increased political polarisation.

  1. The first half of the nineties was fantastic but that all changed when John Howard was elected in March 1996. It was like someone turned off the lights. The whole decade went pair shaped. The Port Arthur Massacre a month after Howard took office was symbolic because it was the day the country I loved suddenly died.

  2. Ah the Ninetie. My decade interms of music and entertainment content whether it be sport or Movies/Tv Shows, the Nineties imo was the best. It was the decade where Technology and Story-telling were finaly in sync especially with Sci-Fi content and when tv productions for sport and movies were getting better and better. Personally when i think of the 90s in relation to music i think of Video Hits and Network TEN’s resurgence. I had a lot of very font memories from the 90s. My entire music knowledge came from watching Network TEN and Video Hits. I watched last weeks episodes will watch this weeks.
