1.8m viewers watched Rekindling win Melbourne Cup glory yesterday.
There were 849,000 in Melbourne alone with 377,000 in Sydney and 255,000 in Brissy. The number does not include regional viewers, those watching in offices and pubs around the country, nor those streaming the event -Seven cites 350,000 concurrent streams on 7Live, the biggest Live streaming event of 2017, up 22% on 2016.
The shift to streaming presumably accounts for a downward trend in broadcast numbers:
2016: 1.99m
2015: 2.07m
2014: 2.12m
2013: 2.17m
The Cup doesn’t directly contribute to Seven’s primetime share but promos helped The Good Doctor to another big win at 1.19m viewers well ahead of The Big Bang Theory, NCIS and Keeping Australia Safe.
Newcomer Instant Hotel won its earlier slot but only with 695,000 viewers. Family Food Fight and 7:30 were not far behind, followed by Jamie Oliver.
Seven network won Tuesday with 32.8% then Nine 26.4%, TEN 17.4%, ABC 15.4% and SBS 8.1%.
In primetime The Good Doctor was again the highest show at 1.19m viewers for Seven followed by Seven News (1.04m / 1.02m), Home and Away (736,000), Instant Hotel (695,000), The Chase (656,000 / 191,000 in 3 cities) and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (416,000).
Nine News (955,000 / 933,000), A Current Affair (829,000), Family Food Fight (558,000), The Big Bang Theory (524,000 / 235,000), Hot Seat (509,000 / 271,000) and Kath & Kim (420,000 / 402,000).
The Project (502,000 / 317,000) was best for TEN then TEN Eyewitness News (476,000), Jamie’s Quick & Easy Food (446,000), NCIS (349,000), Family Feud (322,000) and NCIS: Los Angeles (298,000).
ABC News (734,000), 7:30 (550,000), Screen Time (334,000), Keeping Australia Safe (331,000), Grand Designs (200,000) and Mambo: Art Irritates Life (150,000) comprised ABC’s night.
On SBS it was Great American Railroad Journeys (327,000), Insight (311,000), Dateline (231,000) and SBS World News (117,000).
Shaun the Sheep (269,000) was on a multichannel high.
Today Extra: 125,000 / 78,000
Studio 10: 99,000 / 66,000 / 65,000
OzTAM Overnights: Tuesday 7 December 2017

Still find it intrguing that The Big Bang Theory episode at 10:15pm is the same episode that is on at 8:45pm just after two episodes of Kath and Kim. The idea is working it seems as Kath and Kim are rating well for the time of night and that means the new episode of The Big Bang Theory gets shown twice in one night to a combined rating of 759,000 (so Nine are getting their dollars worth).
Agreed.
I’m enjoying the Good doctor, what a great actor that you guy is
Yesterday, I had the chance of streaming Melbourne Cup race on Freeview on my iPad. The picture quality wasn’t too bad despite having a bit of gimmicks. I was wondering whether streaming via Freeview & 7+ count?
FV links to 7Live streaming so it will count in their numbers.
why does bruce have to do everything thats what made watching the lead up to and the after part of the race painful
I was in the shower. I dont watch fake races.fà aaaaaaaakķkkkkkeeeee
Great race yesterday, it is one of my favourite sporting events of the year. Glamour, gambling, alcohol….love it….
Agree, I love a day at the races.
With almost $90m in bets on the Cup but only 1.8m recorded viewers OzTam must be sweating on the “National Security” chip implant in our earlobes.
Great to see the good doctor still going well. Even better we get it tomorrow night to.
Not everyone watches the cup, no one in our house bothered.
Thanks for letting us know 😛
I am glad simmo3 let us know because I and my household was the same!
And us…
You mean to say that you have no interest in an event which glamorises animal cruelty, gambling, excessive alcohol consumption, narcissism, and leaving your rubbish for someone else to deal with? I’m shocked!
Not to mention the obscene amount of money involved – imagine what that money could do to help people.
Yes is could fund the unemployment benefits off all the TAB staff, betting clerks, hospitality staff, IT technician and programmers, stable workers, horse breeders, stock agents, vets who wouldn’t be employed otherwise.
You would hope vets would still be employed!
@Pertinax – sure, let’s just keep doing something because some people make money from it. This very same argument was used by the cotton growers of the US southern states to oppose the abolition of slavery, and could be applied to the tobacco industry today.
@David – the vets employed within the racing industry are horse specialists and there is not a huge demand for people who can shoot an animal with a rifle from less than a metre away. I expect that many of them would need to retrain or find themselves out of work.

Lucky for you the Melbourne Cup will probably never be out-rated on the first Tuesday in November. You can keep reusing this headline 🙂
Yes it’s a tradition. Will use it again next year.
Well I guess it’s a compliment that someone would bother going back all those years just to check a headline
It shows up in “related posts.” I like the pun, happy to use it every year.
You could digress to: “Seven races to another ratings cup win” but it is longer and less punny! I suppose I have 363 days to think of a better one….
Melbourne Cup huge as always, taking in mind what David said about out-of-home TV viewing, it would absolutely be the closest event to something that ‘stops the nation’ (shame we’ll never know) + 350k streaming is enormous. Good Doctor on fire for Seven, but disappointing number for Instant Hotel launch (on Melbourne Cup night of all days!) Food Fight saw an increase, after falling below 500k on Monday. Unbelievable what happens to shows like 60min and Big Bang with no Block.
I was out shopping during the cup. Perfect time
Instant Hotel doing 695k, as a Melb Cup and with Good Doctor doing 1.19m. That is pretty low and would be concerning for anyone who likes the show.
