Axed: Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency

Douglas Adams-inspired series with Elijah Wood is ending at 2 seasons.

BBC America has cancelled Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency after two seasons.

Starring Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood and Hannah Marks, the series is based on the novels by Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and set in the unexpected world of the hyper, absurd, eponymous detective Dirk Gently.

BBC America said in a statement, “We are beyond proud of this brilliant original series and so appreciative of the outstanding team behind it including Max Landis, Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, and many many others. It was a privilege to work with this talented and passionate group of writers, producers and actors on these two seasons of Dirk. Thanks also to the passionate fans who embraced this fantastically novel world.”

The BBC produced Dirk Gently starring Stephen Mangan and Darren Boyd in 2010 but this was a US co-production with Netflix, which also aired in Australia.

  1. BTW, BBC America have axed (due to ratings I assume), but the series is produced/owned by AMC who are still trying to find a home for it (Netflix most likely as they handle international broadcast)

  2. The first season was entertaining if somewhat quirky, the show was made more interesting by starring Elijah Wood who is quite adept at visual comedy, so you would think that Dirk Gently is a natural fit for Netflix who seems to like comedy shows, this makes it all the more curious why BBC America would want to cancel after just 2 seasons, especially as Netflix is spending big on other less commendable efforts.
