Blue Planet II promos: Nine vs BBC

What does Cake by the Ocean have to do with David Attenborough?

Ok I’m confused.

I’m trying to work out what Cake by the Ocean by DNCE has to do with David Attenborough and the BBC’s 4 years of filming Blue Planet II.

That’s how it is being promoted on Nine. But does it really have anything to do with the tone of the show?

Ah!
Waste time with a masterpiece, don’t waste time with a masterpiece (huh!)
You should be rolling with me, you should be rolling with me (ah)
You’re a real life fantasy, you’re a real life fantasy (huh!)
But you’re moving so carefully; let’s start living dangerously

Talk to me, baby
I’m going blind from this sweet, sweet craving, whoa
Let’s lose our minds and go crazy crazy
Ah ya ya ya ya I keep on hoping we’ll eat cake by the ocean

Some years ago Nine found great success with matching “Moves Like Jagger” with The Frozen Planet footage of penguins slipping and sliding on the ice. At least it showcased the humour. I’m guessing they have tried to replicate the formula here.

Blue Planet II is scored by Hans Zimmer, a world apart from DNCE, who even collaborated with Radiohead on their song Bloom.

Here is the way the BBC promoted the series, albeit at a longer length.

  1. Something Australian broadcasters should take note of is that Blue Planet II was released to BBC’s iPlayer app in an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) HDR format, now that would have been a major bonus for those new owners of 4K TV’s this Christmas, if would seem that those shameless self promoting channels like Nine have a lot of technology updates to catch up on if they want to future proof themselves.

  2. The only reason I could think that 9 would play Cake by the Ocean is that it is sung by the group headed by Joe Jonas ! So a bit of cross promotion for people who know the song and love The Voice??

  3. It makes my blood boil that Channel 9 dumb down these David Attenborough documentaries by using inane pop songs in the promos. They used ‘Roar’ by Katy Perry for one a few years back as well.
The ‘cake by the ocean’ ad for ‘Blue Planet II’ popped up quite a bit during Carols by Candlelight and I did wonder what the BBC did to promote it-so, thanks for sharing, David.

  4. Reminds me of when Downton abbey was promoted by ITV vs Channel 7. ITV promos had class and Channel 7’s were just crass. Here we see the same thing. Do we have no class here anymore?
