Every year I file a range of “Oops” stories, from typos to live TV gaffes, which readers love but networks hate….
2017 had some of the most infamous including #whitejacketgate, Natasha Exelby, La La Land winning at the Oscars and a BBC interview on Skype gatecrashed by boisterous children.
But do you remember these? Warning adult themes & language!
Wardrobe
“#Whitejacketgate” needs little explanation. The saga around Amber Sherlock’s tantrum, curiously leaked by a Nine insider, lingered for days and did the network no favours.
‘Rival’ Melbourne weather presenters Jane Bunn (Seven News) and Livinia Nixon (Nine News) wore the same dress when both presenting from Caulfield Racecourse.
Nine’s Alicia Loxley and Seven’s Jacqueline Felgate were also sporting the same outfit the same afternoon, but managed to compliment each other on social media.
Basic facts
A Current Affair failed a basic geography lesson.
And then announced Her Majesty was stepping down from public life….

Mathematics gets the better of the Today show.
Media Watch revealed Seven News ripped this photo off Reddit. It’s a stock image with an O-bike photoshopped in.
TEN apologised for photoshopping an (unpixellated) homophobic poster into a Getty Images pic of an overseas bus shelter, telling Media Watch, “Unfortunately, an oversight in briefing our graphics department interstate may have created a false impression about its size and location. This was not a deliberate attempt to mislead our audience, but a creative error which we regret.”
Seven News ran a story about a new bride nearly drowning after diving into water, dragged down by the weight of her dress. Except the story was reported back in 2015.
Just days later, Today‘s “First on Nine” yarn about offensive rant on a Sydney bus was actually from 2013.

When rage played a music video “Hey Man” by Melbourne’s Kirkis it alarmed some late night viewers into thinking North Korea had pressed the button.
Typos
Neighbours 2017 credits contained three boo-boos, misspelling cast members “Collette Mann”, “Zoe Crammond” and “Ryan Maloney” who has had some 22 years with the show.
Editing stuff ups
Jay Laga’aia was momentarily back in the South African ‘jungle’ on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, 2 days after being voted out.
A MasterChef finale shot changed the scores by awarding 90 points to Ben over 89 for Diana, contradicting those announced by the judges. The error was the result of 2 alternate endings filmed for the TEN reality show.

Media Watch host Paul Barry was decidedly unimpressed when iview mixed up captions for his show with others by Louis Theroux.

FOX Sports had to apologise for “faking” crowd footage at NRL games telling TV Tonight, “During the Rabbitohs v Titans Round 15 simulcast 8pm match, a producer aired archived vision after failing to time out the half time break. It was an error in judgment which we have addressed. This is not a regular practice of FOX Sports.”
Today show censors Treasurer Scott Morrison?
Publicity & press blunders
A press release for ABC sports panel Sideliners tried to crack the gags announcing “ABC bosses put pen to paper this week commissioning a series entitled Fever Pitch first thought to be a 12-part medical drama about a feisty but flawed contagious diseases expert, Professor Pamela Pitch (played by Claudia Karvan).” Given it was clearly having a sly dig at Newton’s Law it was soon deleted from ABC’s publicity site.
Both the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail ran speculative articles that The Bachelor could be going bisexual this year after a casting notice called for “Single women between the ages of 25-35. Single men between the ages of 22-35.”
News Corp had to adjust a headline from Sonia Kruger’s “25 years in TV” to “25 years in showbiz”. For the record she joined Wonder World in November 1994, making it 23 years.

Seven’s Jessica Adamson was clearly unhappy about saying “Big Ben’s bongs” were falling silent. Listen for the F-bomb under her breath…

“Think you know your footy?” asked a Nine promo for the AFL Footy Show. “Plus Adam Rance is back on the road with Sam.” Except that would be Alex Rance…
And even though this took place on December 31 2016, one just can’t go past Mariah performing with no time for a sound check. Yeah right.

The kids interrupting the BBC interview still makes me giggle!
Nice work David putting all this together. For me Jacketgate tops the year! You don’t have to be Amber Sherlock Holmes (sorry I had to) to figure that one out!. Happy New Year to you Mr Knox.
