Airdate: Black Lightning

Cress Williams stars as a retired superhero forced to become a vigilante again.

New US superhero series Black Lightning begins today on Netflix.

The series by Greg Berlanti, stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce / Black Lightning, a retired superhero forced to become a vigilante again.

This has been produced for The CW and debuted last week in the US. Episodes are due to drop weekly.

Jefferson Pierce is a man wrestling with a secret. Nine years ago, Pierce was gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, which he used to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life and his family on the line, he left his Super Hero days behind. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.

Tuesday January 23 on Netflix.

  1. I’m in the U.S at the moment so I watched it on the CW. Great show. Would recommend. Even though it’s a DCTV show on the CW by Greg Berlanti it has nothing to do with the Arrowverse (Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends).

    1. If this CW show has nothing to do with the Arrow / Flash shows perhaps the DC universe will eventually need Greg Berlanti to co-ordinate all these super characters as has Stan Lee with his burgeoning Marvel shows. The DC metahumans obviously have a common genus that began with the particle accelerator accident the only way this super hero could be explained is if he existed in one of the many parallel Earths which will be familiar to followers of The Flash.

      1. The show didn’t explain where he got his powers (which he does have when he used his powers without his suit early into episode 1) but I don’t think they need to use the partical accelerator for every explanation, it would get pretty boring then. Also, Black Lightning isn’t an origin story like Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends. As the first episodes title explains “The Resurrection” its more of a return story with hints as to why he stopped his second life.

        1. I watched the first episode of Black Lightning last night and felt relieved that the show had charisma and was well directed, it also benefited from having an experienced main actor with a background in playing Sci-Fi characters which helps a lot when creating a super hero with status. Hopefully this show will find it’s own creative direction and not become like Marvels The Punisher or Luke Cage, Black Lightning is vulnerable to serious injury or death so that gives him more human weaknesses to contend with. It will be interesting to see how well this show is received in the USA as there’s quite a competitive market for super heroes at the moment.
