Airdate: Secrets of Tutankhamun’s Treasures

Another doco series about Egyptian secrets begins on SBS this Sunday.

Another doco series about Egyptian secrets, Secrets of Tutankhamun’s Treasures, begins on SBS this Sunday.

This is a 3 part series featuring Egyptologist Dr Chris Naunton.

The 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb remains archaeology’s biggest moment. Found almost completely intact and packed with more than 5000 treasures, this beautifully decorated final resting place has unlocked the fascinating world of Tutankhamun and his 18th Dynasty – the most powerful kings and queens in all of Ancient Egypt. But despite almost a century of investigation by the best brains in Egyptology, they still hold big secrets.

In this three-part series, Dr Chris Naunton leads an international team of experts seeking to unlock the hidden secrets in Tutankhamun’s treasure trove to answer the most pressing questions about this famous king: Who were his family? Who were his treasures originally made for? And how did he die?

Series One, Episode One:
Found on his mummified remains, Tutankhamun’s legendary death mask is arguably the greatest treasure in history. Immensely beautiful, crafted with enormous skill and weighing in at a staggering 10 kilograms of the purest gold, it is one of the most famous artworks in the world. Yet the mask betrays more than the king’s enormous wealth. Startling discrepancies between the mask face and head piece have led Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves to theorise that the mask wasn’t intended for Tutankhamun at all, but was originally designed for a woman. Now it’s time to put his theory to the test.

Sunday, 14 January at 7.30pm on SBS.

    1. There are a lot of repeats of the docos in that time slot, and even if new, they do tend to cover the same territory-they also vary widely in quality-the recent ‘Trojan Horse’ one was pretty awful for a variety of reasons.
