Gillian Anderson quits X Files, American Gods

"It's time for me to hang up Scully's hat," says X-Files star.

Gillian Anderson says she is done with two key titles, The X-Files and American Gods.

Speaking at the annual Television Critics Association press tour she told media she originally intended to sign on for the six-episode revival of X-Files, but returned for the 2018 revival too.

“It’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is,” Anderson told reporters, ruling out any potential return in the future. “I’m finished, and that’s the end of that.”

“I arrived at the decision before we did the previous six, but I was really curious. I felt that the previous six was going to be it. It was dipping our toe back in again … and getting to play these wonderful characters again,” Anderson said. “I think as [series creator] Chris [Carter] has said himself, that short stack of episodes felt like we were learning how to walk again and that this season of 10 feels like the pace is up and we’re running.”

She also confirmed that she’s walking away from Amazon’s American Gods after showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green quit the series.

“I’m not doing any more American Gods. Bryan and Michael Green aren’t either, as has been announced.” Fuller and Green decided to quit the series after clashing with FremantleMedia over the show’s season two budget.

  1. If they had scripted it right, this season could have opened the door to a “X Files: Next Generation” spin off, where Mulder & Scully appear sporadically as consultants but the show is driven by a new duo (possibly Robbie Amell). If they stuck to the “monster of the week” style, then I think it could work. But I think that with Gillian walking away, that will be it for The X Files.

  2. Gillian does keep herself busy notably in the UK, I cant blame her for quitting X-Files the youthful enthusiasm and original scriptwriting of the earlier seasons is gone and the show is looking done before, and tired looking as does David Duchovny, X-Files obviously cannot easily reboot itself with new younger actors as critics will brand it as a desperate attempt by Chris Carter to keep his primary commercial TV success alive when really it should have been left as a fond memory for it’s rapidly ageing fans.
