TV Tonight Awards: Best of 2017

Readers leap for Nine's Ninja as the Best New Show of 2017 in annual site awards.

Australian Ninja Warrior has been voted the Best New Show (Australian) in the 2017 TV Tonight Awards.

The hit Nine show beat Sisters, True Story with Hamish & Andy and The Letdown for the win -all were amongst runners-up with readers.

Co-host Rebecca Maddern said: “Australian Ninja Warrior is such a brilliant show to work on and to be recognised by the TV Tonight readers is a real honour.

“The obvious heroes are our Ninjas but behind the scenes our incredible crew of 300 plus work tirelessly to create captivating TV, so thank you to every single person involved in this show.

“Ben, Freddie and I love every minute of working on this show and hope it continues for many more seasons to come.”

Also winning big this year was Rosehaven as Best Australian Comedy with Celia Pacquola voted Favourite Female Performer -and she ranked second as Most Underrated Performer.

“The process of making Rosehaven has been such a wonderful experience, allowing me to combine a few of my great loves; writing, acting and getting up to nonsense in Tasmania with my best friend,” said Pacquola.

“The fact that it’s found an audience that seem to really enjoy the finished product has been a fantastic outcome and more than we could have hoped for. And to win an award on top of that is truly the icing on the cake.

“Luke and I are very proud of our little show and so pleased that the TV Tonight readers like it too. Thank you for the support and here’s to another exciting year of TV.”

This year there were numerous repeat winners, demonstrating favourite shows have a vice-like grip with readers.

But amongst the changes this year, were new victories for The Good Doctor, Four Corners and Big Bash League.

Sam Pang almost overtook Shaun Micallef as Favourite Male, but while the perennial Micallef hung on for another win, Pang retained Most Underrated Performer.

  1. I tossed up between Michael James Scott and Sam Pang as the underrated performer for 2017 and i picked MJS. He appeared on 2 episodes of HYBPA. First appearance of him on HYBPA was a quizmaster and the 2nd appearance was being a contestant.

  2. Thanks for this David. Good to see Four Corners and The Living Room get some wins. As for Ninja Warrior, I found it far to derivative of other shows like It’s a Knockout and Gladiators to really capture my attention.

  3. I must be one of the very few who didn’t watch Aussie Ninja Warrior as to me the program sounded similar to Gladiators. I’m definitely following it this year. Where’s Classic Countdown, the Good Fight, Liar and Friday on my Mind?
