US actor Jerry Van Dyke, brother of Dick Van Dyke, has died aged 86.
He is best known for his role as Assistant Coach Luther Van Dam on US sitcom Coach from 1989 – 1997 -and The Middle.
He died in Arkansas, his health had deteriorated since a traffic accident in 2015.
Van Dyke’s television career began in tandem with his brother’s, as one of his earliest appearances was on The Dick Van Dyke Show in 1962 as Stacey Petrie. He famously turned down a starring role in Gilligan’s Island to work on My Mother the Car.
His credits included Yes Dear, Raising Hope, My Name is Earl, Committed, Teen Angel, The Drew Carey Show, Grace Under Fire, Newhart, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Gomer Pyle USMC, That Girl, Perry Mason, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, Mary Tyler Moore, Love American Style plus appearances on appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show before becoming a regular on The Judy Garland Show.
