Binge viewers at greater risk of fatal blood clots

Not even exercise is enough to ignore the dangers of prolonged viewing, US study finds.

In news that will surprise nobody, a US study suggests Binge watching may be detrimental to your health.

Who knew that sitting so long could be so bad for you?

The report from the University of Minnesota found an increase in fatal blood clots by prolonged viewers.

In an analysis of 15,000 adults divided into four groups based on how they watched television, people who watch “very often” run a 1.7 times higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) — or deep vein thrombosis — clots in the legs and pulmonary embolisms.

The danger comes from prolonged sitting and impaired circulation and doesn’t seem to be eliminated by exercise during other times or weight levels.

That said I am impressed by the length of time they researched their subjects.

The study followed 15,150 adults over a 24-year-span and divided the participants into groups who never or seldom, sometimes, often or very often watched TV.

Deadline reports the risks of VTE is greatest for adults over age 60.

“Even individuals who regularly engage in physical activity should not ignore the potential harms of prolonged sedentary behaviours such as TV viewing,” said Dr. Yasuhiko Kubota, the study’s lead researcher.

  1. An affirmation for ads on FTA. That’s the time you get up, go to the loo, empty the dishwasher, vacuum a room, almost anything that can be done in three minutes…and usually on your feet!

  2. The average probability of a DVT is 0.001 pa. The risk of it developing into a VTE (where the clot travels to the lungs) is also around 0.001 for someone over 60. So the risk of a VTE is 0.000001. The increased risk is for sitting, it doesn’t matter whether you are bingewatching TV, sitting on plane or reading and this has been well studied before. It increases the risk to 0.0000017 pa. And if you are younger the risk will be lower. Yet another scientific study producing result that were already known, falsely exaggerating the risk by concealing the absolute risk, and relating it to popular topic in the conclusion to generate attention. And it worked there have been 140,000 peer reviewed paper that are index by Google, and this one made it into a meme in the entertainment media.

By all means get up and stand, walk around, stretch while sitting because its bad for you for many…

  3. The most I ever binge watched was 3 hours as I find my attention span wandering and suffer tired eye fatigue, so it must be a folly of younger viewers who plainly can sit down for many hours playing games on their TV and doing little else.

  4. Solution: buy one of those fat-melting, blood circulating machines that you just plug-n-play. You know, those ones they sell on the shopping channels and infotainment shows. TV wins again!
