More Red Dwarf “absolutely” happening

"The order will probably be another TV series, a stage show and possibly a movie," says Doug Naylor.

Series 13 of Red Dwarf is yet to be formally approved, but scriptwriting is already underway, with co-creator Doug Naylor telling fans they should definitely expect a return.

“We’re just trying to work out how and when,” he said. “Everyone seems to be keen so I think that will happen.”

Naylor also mentions that co-creator Rob Grant “may well want to return to Red Dwarf in some capacity down the line”, and he would be more than welcome to do so.

“He’s never mentioned the latest stuff and I’ve never asked him what he thinks of it,” Naylor continued. “But if offered his opinion I’d happily listen.”

Naylor says that there is also talk of both a movie and a stage show, stating: “The order will probably be another TV series, a stage show and possibly a movie, and I think the guys agree on that.

“The film is a long shot at this point just because it can take so long to get funding. While people are happy for us to make TV series and stage shows, and the money is there for us to do it, obviously we’ll do those things since they’re guaranteed.

“I haven’t discussed the idea of a movie with the guys for a while.”

    1. Naylor is writing S XIII in case Dave commission it. After SX it took 3 years before S XI & XII and 4 years to get S VII up. The time to quit while they were ahead was when the BBC started screwing around with S VI to try an cash in, which resulted poor eps that rehashed ideas and lines, and Rob Grant and Chris Barrie quitting.

  1. Watching the repeats on ABC Comedy just reinforces how far this once great show has fallen. But I guess they’ll keep making it as long as they keep the costs down and the core audience keeps showing up.

  2. I am less than excited. I am currently 3 episodes in to watching season 12 and 2 of those episodes just weren’t funny enough to make my rewatch list. That is already worse than season 11, in which 5 out of 6 episodes were great fun.

    1. The last 3 eps are better and refer back to early episodes and focused on the character of Lister and Rimmer. Clearly designed to let it keep going if Dave renews it, but serve as an ending they don’t. I’d recommend you watch the last one at least.

      1. I liked episode 5 and loved episode 6.

Episode 6 makes up for episodes 2, 3 and 4. Nice to see Holly again, although I will see a lot of him when I start rewatching from the beginning soon.

  3. I’ve watched it since the beginning when it was shown in the ABC arts program block on Sunday afternoons in 1989-also read the books-the last couple of series have been almost unwatchable though, jumbles of ideas, not very funny and the eps just stop without a real ending.
    It needs to end.
