WIN TV screens Tas election ads during blackout

ACMA may launch investigation into possible breach of political ad blackout rule.

Media watchdog the Australian Communications and Media Authority may look into whether WIN Television breached the Broadcasting Services Act after ads for both political parties screened on Thursday night during its 6pm news.

Under the Broadcasting Services Act Tasmanian radio and TV broadcasters are prohibited from showing any election advertisements from 12am Thursday 1 March, until the polls close at 6 pm today.

Yesterday an ACMA spokesperson said it had not received any complaints but could launch its own investigation.

There are continued calls for the blackout, which only applies to broadcasters, to be dropped. The ruling does not include online or print media.

WIN TV has been contacted for comment.
