ABBA TV special to use “ABBAtars”

NBC special to use virtual “ABBAtars” which Björn describes as "simply mind-boggling."

NBC is to produce an ABBA special which will feature virtual “ABBAtars” that will bring the band back to life.

Björn Ulvaeus, 72, revealed the news during a speech in Brussels, described the effect as “simply mind-boggling.”

“You’ll hear the voices of ABBA coming out of the mouths of the ABBAtars,’ he said.

“You won’t be able to see that they’re not human beings. It’ll be spooky, I assure you, but great fun and no one has done it before.”

Ulvaeus said US ‘techno artists’ had scanned the band last year.

“They photographed us from all possible angles, they made us grimace in front of cameras, they painted dots on our faces, they measured our heads,” he explained.

“Apparently, a cranium doesn’t change with age the way the rest of your body falls apart!”

The two-hour show is expected to be broadcast by the BBC in Britain and simulcast across the globe.

If successful, a world tour is even planned for 2019 or 2020.

  1. This sounds great. Looking forward to the special and fingers crossed for a tour. The fact is that ABBA will never tour in person again, so if this is the best we can get, I’ll take it!

  2. This isn’t “news”. I’m sure it was hinted at in the Sunday Night interview last year, around the same time the press carried the story.

But the notion was floated at least one year prior.
