New US drama For the People premieres next month on Universal.

The series follows new lawyers working for the defence and the prosecution as they handle high-profile and high-stakes cases, while their personal lives intersect.

The Shondaland-produced series from Paul William Davies (Scandal) debuted on ABC in the US last month.

Set in the United States District Court a.k.a. “The Mother Court”, this new Shondaland series follows six talented young lawyers working on opposite sides of the law and handling the most high-profile and high-stakes federal cases in the country.

Best friends Sandra Bell (Britt Robertson) and Allison Adams (Jasmin Savoy Brown) serve as public defenders alongside Jay Simmons (Wesam Keesh) and their boss, Federal Public Defender Jill Carlan (Hope Davis). They face off against prosecutors Seth Oliver (Ben Rappaport), Leonard Knox (Regé-Jean Page), Kate Littlejohn (Susannah Flood) and their supervisor, chief of the Criminal Division in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Roger Gunn (Ben Shenkman).

Our lawyers are joined by Judge Nicholas Byrne (Vondie Curtis-Hall), who rules on some of the court’s most controversial cases, and Tina Krissman (Anna Deavere Smith), the formidable clerk of Court who keeps everyone in line. These young lawyers will be put to the test both personally and professionally as their lives intersect in and out of America’s most prestigious trial court.

8:30pm Thursday May 3 on Universal.

  1. New programming is a welcomed addition to Universal. Looking at the schedule you could be convinced they were thinking they were about to close with them having Law and Order franchises making up 90% of their schedule. Unfortunately though given the looks and ratings of this one I think I’ll be giving it a miss.

  2. I’ve watched the first 4 episodes on TVNZ OnDemand and am also watching Station 19. Both shows suffer (in my mind anyway) from being compared to How To Get Away With Murder and Chicago Fire. Watchable, but a little dull.

  3. ABC commissioned 10 eps as a mid season replacement. It’s not doing well and it looks like that might be it. Station 19 is doing a bit better and has the benefit of being another Grey’s spin off. But Shondaland has had more flops than hits, and Rhimes is now exclusively contracted to Netflix.
