2017 documentary Mr. Gay Syria, which looks at the struggle of being gay in the Arab world, will screen on SBS VICELAND tonight.

In much of the Arab world, coming out can be deadly. Even more dangerous is speaking out about coming out. As the winner of the inaugural Mr Gay Syria, Husein Sabat shouldered a heavier burden than most pageant winners . A refugee of the country’s devastating civil war, Sabat hides his sexuality from his conservative family and has a child. In the documentary Mr Gay Syria, he explains why he chose to compete.
