CBS backs TEN evolution

CBS Studios boss gives an interview, backing TEN's drive into more local content.

CBS Studios International president Armando Nunez has given his first Australian interview since acquiring TEN.

Speaking to the Australian Financial Review following his presentations to TEN staff last week, Nunez (pictured far left) indicates his faith in the network’s direction and commitment to local content. He denied the move was one designed to “flip” the network for short term gains.

“It’s not like we’re going to acquire this and it’s going to be a bunch of Americans telling a bunch of Australians how to do things. It’s really a two-way street,” he said.

“From a market perspective, a little bit perhaps internally as well, there was this kind of expectation that from one day to the next after CBS acquired TEN that the ratings were going to double overnight and all of a sudden there was going to be a new programming team and a new news team and so on and so forth. Obviously there are no plans to do that, we have all the confidence in the world in Paul (Anderson, CEO) and his management team, they’re a terrific team.”

Nunez backs TEN’s strategy to produce more domestic shows as part of a long-term commitment to lift the network.

“The creation of content in the variety of different genres that exist and the execution and monetisation of that content. I don’t mean to oversimplify the process, there’s a lot more that goes into that, but ultimately that’s what this business is about,” he said.

“Even since just four months ago since the CBS deal, we have had some significant moves in terms of commissioning Australian programming. Even though bringing Lisa over happened prior to the formal closing of the acquisition, having an incredible talent like Lisa Wilkinson coming over to join TEN, again was another indication of our investment in this market.”

  1. I have noticed a big change at Ten since cbs took over that’s panel shows and more panel shows way too many panel shows every timeslot seems to have a panel show what are they cheap to make must be .your killing us cbs .time you got some creative types in to think outside the square and spend some money on local drama like an ncis Aussie version and how about a cbs this morning show Aussie style .your breakfast line up is crap but then again so is your evening lunch time not much better and whats the go with Lisa Wilkinson what she doing two hrs a week on tV cmon for two mil.

  2. Here’s my suggestion for Ten’s weekday line-up:-
5am – 7am Old style cartoons that CBS own (Flintstones, Jetsons, He-Man, Wacky Races etc) 7am – 9am Old style TV shows that CBS own (Beverley Hillbillies, Gillian’s Island, Different Stokes etc) 9am – 12 noon That thing they have on now .. The Circle or whatever it’s called 12 noon – 2pm Old Movies that CBS own (like Columbo etc) 2pm – 3pm Some cheap Entertainment type show out of CBS. ….. something like that Entertainment Tonight 3pm – 5pm Kids Shows CBS owns (more cartoons and shows aimed at kids) 5pm – 6pm A national news program hosted by someone cheap with a lot of the stories coming from Sky News or Regional Affiliates or even packaged stuff out of PR firms 6pm – 7pm That Panel show with Waleed and Lisa Wilkinson 7pm – 10pm CBS shows that do okay in America 10pm – 12 midnight CBS Late Shows etc etc midnight…

  3. I know David joke about Big Brother but it just maybe Tens answer. That and Idol both in their original format could just work in 2019 as it did back when. Maybe a modern version of Comedy Company for Sunday Nights. What’s not working for Ten, in my view, are the encores. On nights they air Don’t seem to rate well at all.

  4. CBS don’t have a magic wand and it may not be possible for the 3rd network to survive. There are only a few shows that work on FTA and having the 3rd ranked version isn’t going to be profitable. Where CBS can help is ensuring Ten can compete against Seven and Foxtel for BBL rights, without which they have no hope.

  5. I totally agree. TEN churn out so many of these comedy/panels shows that it becomes routine and they all just end up getting lost in amongst each other, with no real points of difference.

  6. This is hilarious – everything the readers of this page said would happen, the president of CBS has said it isnt.

Any everyone thinking CBS was going to a be silver beacon of light for TEN are deluding themselves

  7. They need to be more creative then half arsed panel / studio shows like cram and that movie show with rove .
Seems rushed ideas that are cheap to produce . They can do better ..
