Hire car with Seven stars detained by police

Sometimes there are stories so bizarre you couldn't make them up.

Mel McLaughlin detailed a bizarre incident on air at the Commonwealth Games on the weekend, in which a hire car used to drive commentators to venues was detained by police -suspected of being stolen.

“We are very conservative and we like to do the right thing at Channel 7. Three of our great commentators in Bruce McAvaney, Giaan Rooney and Ian Thorpe, the legendary Ian Thorpe, have been driven around the Commonwealth Games obviously in hire cars which take them around, no problem” she said.

“So, earlier today, the car on the way to the pool was pulled over by police and impounded because it was apparently a stolen vehicle.

“It had Ian Thorpe and Giaan Rooney in it. Not the great Bruce …

“That is what happened. Now Giaan and Thorpey had to walk the rest of the way to the pool.”

Tom Williams responded: “No lift to work by the police?”

The car did not belong to Seven, but a local company. Whilst some networks use cab vouchers for talent, others will use drivers and hire cars, according to their needs.

A Queensland Police Services media statement said no charges have been made over the incident.

“Last night officers detained a hire vehicle which was identified as travelling with New South Wales licence plates which had been reported stolen,” the statement said.

  1. I assumed most media/celebrities used private chauffeur driven vehicles. But I’m sure many use Uber or even Taxis (enter at own risk!) We know one who has publically stated he’ll be using Uber, 3AW radio’s John Burns who has had his licence suspended for drink driving again (though as he’d arrive in the wee hours of the morning, doubt anybody would be around to notice him).
