“MKR scandal” hits season high

Ratings: There was never any doubt a heavily-promoted episode would be big. But viewers did not stay for Back with the Ex.

Seven’s promo department will be smiling this morning with a heavily-promoted episode of My Kitchen Rules scoring 1.62m viewers last night -its highest numbers so far this year.

With no competition from The Voice there was never any doubt the “scandal” involving one team dismissed from the table would be big. It topped all 3 demos and was nearly a million in front of Bachelor in Paradise on 630,000. An Elton John special on Nine was 542,000.

But the bad news was it did nothing to help launch Back with the Ex on 449,000 – a whopping loss of 1.17m viewers from 9pm and some on social media have criticised MKR for primetime bullying.

Meanwhile ABC had a tough night with Hard Quiz its best entertainment performer at 557,000 while Sando is struggling on 246,000.

Seven network won Wednesday with 36.8% then Nine 26.3%, TEN 15.5%, ABC 14.6% and SBS 6.8%.

My Kitchen Rules was #1 for Seven with 1.62m then Seven News (988,000 / 964,000), Home and Away (735,000), The Chase (582,000 / 349,000) and Back with the Ex (449,000).

Nine News (931,000 / 923,000) led for Nine then A Current Affair (770,000), Elton John: I’m Still Standing (542,000), Hot Seat (472,000 / 297,000) and The Beatles: Eight Days a Week: The Touring Years (336,000).

Bachelor in Paradise (630,000) led for TEN followed by The Project (505,000 / 336,000), TEN Eyewitness News (430,000), The Graham Norton Show (326,000) and Family Feud (299,000). This is Us was just 151,000.

ABC News (691,000), Hard Quiz (557,000), Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell (525,000), 7:30 (504,000), Sando (246,000), Think Tank (219,000) and Insert Name Here (160,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was Michael Portillo’s Abandoned Britain (289,000), The Ganges with Sue Perkins (181,000), SBS World News (141,000) and The Good Fight (121,000).

Thomas and Friends on ABC KIDS topped multichannels at 185,000.

Sunrise: 293,000
Today: 259,000
News Breakfast: 104,000 / TBA

  1. I quite enjoy This Is Us and I think the acting is incredible. It sucks that it is rating so poorly. Admittedly I record the episodes and watch them later in the week because it’s on too late for me. I wonder if the ratings go up with recordings.

  2. Im enjoying The Good Fight but I wish it was a bit like other legal shows where we see actual cases. Im a bit over the Trump mentions.

also thankyou ch7 on bringing back a new Hell’s Kitchen. I know it’s 5 years old but I enjoy the show. Completely different to the Aus version last year. Gordon does not hold back.

    1. Agree. The anti-Trump theme is getting boring. Have they forgotten there is an audience outside of the USA? Given the average American’s knowledge of geography, probably.

      1. Like the late night show, Stephen Colbert, which I watch on a not all that regular basis…but it seems to be all Trump bashing for ages now…given up…totally annoying.

  3. For for interest sake, I have a feeling that MKR rating is higher than any normal episode of Married At First Sight this year (meaning excluding the finale)? And we know how well/talked about Married was this year.

So whilst the promos/tactics/bullying is a disgrace, hats off to Seven and particularly their promo department. Roaring success, sucked life out of The Voice it seems.

    1. Speaking of “hats off” my mother would like someone to remind one of the male MKR contestants that it is rude to wear a hat inside someone’s house, and extremely rude to wear a hat at a dining table. She refuses to watch MKR trash. The promos are enough to send he off.

        1. Not sure if my comment could be clearer, it was talking about how successful the promos were, nothing to do with “pro Seven” or whatever. I just added added context of what I was talking about.

And nice to see you again Sunny, you’ve disappeared in recent weeks.

          1. You said it ‘sucked the life out of The Voice’ which wasn’t even on last night…. not sure my comment could been ‘clearer’

          2. Thanks Sully. Yes good to be back. Been away during most of the non-ratings period when there’s not much on TV and nothing to comment about. Don’t believe in commenting everyday just for the sake of it.

      1. When I said “sucked the life out of The Voice”, obviously I was referring to the nights it aired.

        Sunday: 1.3m vs 1m
        Monday: 1.25m vs 900k
        Tuesday: 1.3m vs 800k

  4. My Kitchen Rules was #1 for Seven with 1.62m then Nine News (988,000 / 964,000), Home and Away (735,000), The Chase (582,000 / 349,000) and Back with the Ex (449,000).

    I think you mean “7 News”. 😀

    It’s been a long year!

    1. Don’t worry… It was a western suburbs of Melbourne taxi. From experience, there’s a better chance than not that the driver would have taken the contestants to the wrong address.

  5. I watched Michael Portillo’s Abandoned Britain …which was really interesting…why there was ever a town there in the first place…and then back to TEN for Graham Norton…..

    1. Wool. The Salisbury plain was a major wool area until imports from Australia etc. replace it. Since it became sparsely populated a lot of the plain was taken over the military during WWII for tank training areas, shoot and bombing ranges, and Imber for teaching urban building to building fighting. And they have retained it all.

  6. Disgusting, i know peeps need to make a living somehow but really cant fathom how Pete & Manu can associate themselves with this sort of trash programming & still expect to have any credibility left. Its become evident to anyone with half a brain that the drama of this (& other ‘reality’ shows) is pre scripted & deliberate in a push for ratings. And if the ratings for the biggest trash tv hit of the year, MAFS, is anything to go by, we can expect more of this dribble to dominate our screens.

  7. A few eps ago on TBIP a contestant said “look at her flab” Tara straight away said it’s not appropriate. The other contestant then apologised and new she shouldn’t have said it! Who would have thought the contestants would nip this type of behavior quickly. And the judges and seven have let the bullying go on so long. I’m glad I chose to watch The Bach this year instead of MKR.

      1. Same here.
I’m still persevering but boy, do they drag it out !
Flashes of brilliance and poignancy here and there but agree it is bordering on dull at times.
From the way its going I’m expecting them to drag out the lead up to Jack’s demise all through Season 3 as well !

        1. I don’t think I care how he died. Their loss is clear and has shaped their lives into the their late 30’s… if I make it to the end of season 2, I will stop there and read the synopsis if I really care. What annoyed me the most was that I missed the end of the last episode due to an unnecessarily 20 min late start after Graham Norton!?! (A last minute EPG update is not acceptable)

          1. Well said. The show is all about loss in various forms…definitely centres on how each character deals with loss and how it defines their lives and relationships as they age.
Yeah, you really can’t rely on EPG times any more.
So commonly incorrect these days, that if recording, I always add on an extra 30 or 40 mins just to be sure I don’t miss the end of a program.

  8. I’m angry at this show this season, because when the friends who got kicked off when they first had started mouthing off in the series Pete&Manu should’ve stopped it then and there- why did they let it go this further, then they say in the ep- this is unacceptable behaviour I’m like dudes why u saying that now, the judges are annoying, am shocked n surprised n annoyed that the judges and producers let this go on for so long.

  9. it’s disgusting and terrible that the judges and producers let this go for so long- as soon as those 2 girls started mouthing off it should’ve been stopped then and there it shouldn’t have gone on for this long.

    1. For all we know it could be encouraged by the network management. After all it seems to be doing wonders for the ratings and that is all that matters to them.

  10. I am sorry David, I skipped to the comments only, to say Why oh why do people fuel this trash. And it confirms my belief that bullying in school is a problem because society encourages it amongst adults and glorifies it on reality TV
