Nine faces fine for using ANZAC in cash contest

Nine admits it chose the wrong code word for its Mega-Cash-A-Roo giveaway.

Nine is facing a fine of up to $51,000 for using the word ANZAC as a code word in its $10,000 Mega-Cash-A-Roo giveaway on Wednesday.

Fairfax reports under the Protection of Word ANZAC Regulations, the word, or any resembling it, in connection with “any trade, business, calling or profession or in connection with any entertainment or any lottery or art union or as the name or part of a name of any private residence, boat, vehicle of charitable or other institution, or other institution, or any building” is not permitted without the authority of the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs.

Nine did not seek authority to use it.

“The Today show is proud of its extensive support and celebration of ANZAC Day and its important place in our national identity,” a Nine spokesperson said.

“We accept in hindsight it was an inappropriate use of the word. It was never intended to cause offence to anyone.”

A decision is yet to be made by the Minister’s department.

  1. ‘it’s easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission’….seems most work on this premise these days….they don’t care….and an oops…sorry….and life goes on…. ?

  2. Hey Nine, save lawyer’s fees, do a deal now, donate $51,000 to The War Widows’ Guild Of Australia. Not to the RSL, in view of their recently publicised mishandling of funds.

  3. So after Karl was so outraged about a movie opening on ANZAC day, he goes ahead and exploits the very same thing for Today’s tacky, money making competition.
