Nine News announces new sports presenter in Perth

Former Fremantle Dockers captain Matthew Pavlich gets behind the news desk in Perth.

Former Fremantle Dockers captain Matthew Pavlich will become Nine News sports presenter in Perth, for Monday to Wednesday bulletins.

He replaces Michael Thomson who moved into the permanent anchor role in January, following the departure of Tim McMillan.

After retiring from football in 2016, he joined Nine in 2017, presenting AFL reports and interviews with players.

“I am thrilled about this new role and look forward to learning from the likes of Michael Thomson as I grow into this prestigious position. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working in the media after my playing days and the Nine team has been an ideal fit.”

Nine News Director, Shaun Menegola, said: “You don’t have to be a Fremantle Dockers fan to appreciate what Matthew Pavlich achieved in AFL. He is one of the game’s greats and he brings an insider’s perspective to our sport coverage.

“Pav not only knows AFL inside out, he understands how elite sport works and what makes champions tick – it’s a been-there-done-that insight that’s hard to match. It means that Pav can ask the questions that matter from firsthand experience and report with clout. He’ll add an extra dimension to what is already Perth’s best sport bulletin. We’re thrilled to have him on the team.”

Nine Perth Managing Director, Clive Bingwa, said: “We are absolutely committed to local news and will continue to invest in our product and our people. Pav is a great example of this and we look forward to him expanding his duties inside the Nine team.”

Paddy Sweeney will host sport from Thursday – Sunday.

“Paddy is one of the up-and-comers in news. Few people love sport as much as Paddy and he loves helping people to understand what’s happening with their team and their game. He and Pav make an outstanding team,” Menegola said.

Pavlich will present his first sports bulletin on Monday, April 16.

  1. I think the opposite to Sully’s comment – this won’t change a thing for Ch9. Shaun McManus was Sports presenter on the weekends, and that didn’t really help numbers.
I find Pavlich very wooden and although he can provide great insight to footy, doubt he can for other sports.

    1. Agree. Nine are so far behind Seven in Perth they could probably poach Rick & Sue and it wouldn’t make a huge difference lol.

I like Pav though and wish him well. He does a good job on the Fox Footy commentary team too.
