Seven confirms off-camera altercation behind MKR dismissal

Off-screen behaviour escalated into a physical exchange ahead of that dinner table drama.

Seven has now confirmed an off-camera altercation at a hotel in Launceston led to My Kitchen Rules contestants Sonya & Hadil being dismissed from the show.

“While on location in Tasmania, during a break in filming, several members of this year’s teams became involved in an argument which escalated into a physical exchange,” a statement read.

“This regrettable incident was witnessed by other team members.

“Over the following days, producers put in considerable effort to rebuild the teams and their relationships with each other.

“Eventually, it became apparent the situation was beyond repair, resulting in one team being dismissed from the show.”

Seven has been critical of the behaviour of the two NSW friends saying, “This level of behaviour does not fit within the agreed workplace values of Channel Seven.”

But Sonya & Hadil have in turn criticised Seven, accusing the network of screening the footage for ratings at the same time as calling it bullying behaviour.

“We will not apologise to the network who twisted, provoked and fuelled this entire situation. We do however wish to apologise to the viewers for having to witness and endure the situation which should have never been allowed to go to air,” they said on Instagram.

“We wish the remaining teams in the competition the best of luck.”

Seven’s statement has been supplied to media ahead of the episode in which their fate is decided.

  1. Going by the promos there still seems to be a lot of contestants left, considering this show started as soon as the Tennis finished. While I’m aware it was held over during the Comm. Games, it still seems like it’s going to drag on for the best part of the year. When is it due to finish?

      1. Think thats tongue in cheek David – They are already promoting House Rules

7 teams left – Team a week to Grand final – Should be over by end of May

  2. All these people who love cooking shows watching MKR makes about as much sense as watching Married At First Sight if you love marriage. I enjoyed all the drama, bitching and bullying on MKR myself. It’s just an entertaining mindless bit of trash to indulge on a few evenings of the week.

  3. Seven has left all that too late. We won’t be watching anymore. Those two women were possibly encouraged at the start and then went totally overboard. They are at fault and must be removed but seven is at fault too and MKR is finished imho.

We are looking forward to Australian Masterchef which has nice contestants and is all about cooking quality food.

  4. I really hope this backfires on Seven. It’s disgraceful the way they’re milking it for all it’s worth. Sadly this may set a precedent for other reality shows to follow if it continues to rate well. Standards will get even lower. Using trashy, gutter tactics to get viewers. Class and integrity are becoming things of the past.

    1. Yep its already setting the tone for other shows, if you’ve seen the Voice promo where George is having a go at Kelly, this is a taste of things to come. And meanwhile there are ‘anti bullying’ programs being rolled out in schools etc, but these ratings grabs are being aired in PG timeslots….

        1. Yes this isthe first time i remember it being so intense one is getting in the others face like theyre about to get physical with it, that is over stepping the mark…

  5. If a cooking show about food can’t be done in a fun way with respect for other contestants instead of judgement and spite then its time to can it.
Give me cooking shows like Good Chef, Bad Chef any day.
