US greenlights The Goldbergs spin-off

80s-inspired sitcom will follow its high school teachers in the 1990s.

US 1980s-inspired sitcom The Goldbergs is getting a spin-off set in the 1990s.

The untitled series, based on a story by Marc Firek and Adam F. Goldberg, will follow the teachers from William Penn Academy including Principal Glascott (Tim Meadows), Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen) and Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka).

The Goldbergs was given a two-season renewal by the ABC network last May, following the end of its fourth season. Season five is currently airing in the US.

ABC has previously ordered a pilot for a spin-off based around coach Rick Mellor that ultimately was not picked up, but aired as a S5 episode “1990-Something.”

The new series is due in the 2018-19 US season. The Goldbergs airs in Australia on Seven.

  1. Does anyone else recognise coach Mellor (Bryan Callen) as one of Carrie’s one night stands in SATC season 6? Charlotte’s wedding to Harry episode. He put her back out by…going too fast and rough lol.

  2. Obviously there is a business case for it, but I’ve never felt compelled to watch The Goldbergs. It isn’t for my demographic anyway, don’t think.

Also, agree with Pertinax – ch7 stuffed up their programming, as per usual. When will stations learn just to commit to a schedule?

  3. Well Seven owns the rights to The Goldbergs, and uses repeats to fill lots of late night slots and then switches to burning off off new episodes when their exclusive first run rights are about to expire, without any notice anyway.

    1. I stopped watching early in the third season because I was over working out if it was going to be included in the schedule. Many times they would show one episode and then break for two to three weeks before resuming.
