ABC’s anticipated new six-part drama Mystery Road is headed to Sunday nights in June.
The series, a spin-off the 2013 film of the same name, features an all-star cast and launches with a double episode. The full series will be available to binge on iview following the broadcast.
Aaron Pedersen and Judy Davis lead a powerhouse of Australian talent, including co-stars Deborah Mailman, Colin Friels, Wayne Blair, Anthony Hayes, Ernie Dingo, John Waters, Aaron McGrath, Tasma Walton, Madeleine Madden, Kris McQuade, Meyne Wyatt, Tasia Zalar and Ningali Lawford Wolf.
When there is a mysterious disappearance on an outback cattle station, Detective Jay Swan (Pedersen) is assigned to investigate. Working with local cop Emma James (Davis), Jay’s investigation uncovers a past injustice that threatens the fabric of the whole community.
Filmed in spectacular locations in Western Australia’s East Kimberley, the series is a spin-off from Ivan Sen’s internationally acclaimed and award-winning films Mystery Road and Goldstone and is directed by Rachel Perkins, produced by David Jowsey and Greer Simpkin, with Ivan Sen and ABC’s Sally Riley as Executive Producers.
As well as being the only Australian television series in competition at prestigious TV drama festival Series Mania in Lille, France this May, Mystery Road will have a masterclass session at Banff World Media Festival this June – an honour previously held by high profile drama including The Handmaid’s Tale and Black-ish.
Mystery Road is produced by Bunya Productions for the ABC with funding support from Screen Australia’s Indigenous Department, Screenwest and Lotterywest, the Western Australian Regional Film Fund supported by Royalties for Regions, Create NSW and produced in association with all3media International who are the international partner on the series.
Mystery Road will screen in the 25th anniversary year of Screen Australia’s Indigenous Department, of which the ABC is a long-term partner.
Sunday, 3 June at 8.30pm on ABC.

Wasn’t sure where to add the following comment, so thought id add it here:
I just got home from watching a special screening of the first two episodes of Mystery Road. What a great show. Aaron Pederson and Judy Davis are great in it. And so are the ensemble cast. Quite a few familiar faces in it. Scenery of Western Australian outback beautiful.
On a sad note – Jessica Falkholt has a role in this show. She passed away earlier this year in a tragic car accident.
Looks amazing.
David, regarding release on iview – do you know if it’s a complete series release following the June 3 premiere, or following completion of series 5 weeks (or so) later?
I do. Full season after double episode premiere.
Great news, thank you
This was the thing that Shaun M spent much time parodying on the recent season of ‘Mad As Hell’.
Yes, haven’t seen the movie so that would be good.
Really looking forward to the miniseries -some top class local actors involved.
Movie on iview from May 4 – June 3.
Thanks very much David : )
Will make sure to watch before viewing the miniseries.
Is ABC planning to screen the movie?
Actually there were 2, Goldstone in 2016 a second feature. Will ask about a replay.
