Amazon rescues The Expanse

Amazon boss backs a fourth season of sci-fi which ignited a fan campaign when cable TV culled it.

It’s official. Amazon has finalised a deal to continue The Expanse to a fourth season, following its axing by Syfy.

The announcement was made by Amazon boss, Jeff Bezos, at National Space Society’s International Space Development Conference in Los Angeles.

The Expanse team was in the audience for Bezos’ Q&A, with Cas Anvar, filming the big announcement.

“I was talking to the cast half an hour ago, before the break for dinner started,” Bezos said. “I was telling them that we are working hard at Amazon to save The Expanse but it wasn’t a done deal yet. During dinner, ten minutes ago, I just got word that The Expanse is saved,” Bezos said to a big applause. “The show is extraordinary and these guys are unbelievably talented,” he added.

In the US Amazon enjoyed SVOD rights to the show, while Syfy had broadcast rights.

Producers Alcon Entertainment Co-Founders and Co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson: “We couldn’t be more excited that The Expanse is going to continue on Amazon Prime! We are deeply grateful that Jeff Bezos, Jen Salke, and their team at Amazon have shown such faith in our show. We also want to thank Laura Lancaster, head of Alcon Television, for her tireless efforts. We are fully aware that this wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the staggering outpouring of support from the most creative, hardest working sci-fi fans around the world. From reddit campaigns to airplanes, we say thank you. It worked!”

The news is unlikely to see the show shift from Netflix to Amazon in Australia, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

  1. This is excellent news. I have both Netflix & Amazon Prime Video subscriptions, so as long as it appears on one of these streaming services, I’m all good.

  2. streaming is opening the door to keeping shows alive when the American ratings game would usually kill it, sometimes prematurely, the international audiences who are the ones who lose out in the short to medium term could well have a stronger voice in the future to keep their favourite show for another season.
