Axed: The Last Ship to end with fifth season

Confirmation of a final voyage for US action drama.

US cable network TNT has now confirmed what fans of The Last Ship have suspected: the fifth season will be the last.

In September cast member Travis Van Winkle posted news (and subsequently deleted) on Instagram after wrapping production on Season 5, referring to a “series wrap.”

At the time TNT responded with a statement, “We shot two seasons simultaneously, the fourth is currently on the air and the fifth will return next summer. We greenlit the fifth with the idea that it could be the final season, however it’s far too early to make that determination.”

Deadline is now reporting TNT boss Kevin Reilly confirmed a final season at US Upfronts.

The good news is it does not end with a cliffhanger, allowing story arcs to resolve.

The Last Ship airs in Australia on Stan but a returning date has not been confirmed.

  1. The story arcs could have been resolved a lot earlier, but I suppose the shows long post apocalyptic epilogue to extend the series was too hard to resist. I suspect that if Eric Dane was keen on keeping his role as main actor and producer of the show going there could have been further negotiations for The Last Ships continuation.
