Basil Zempilas replacing Kochie claim is “100% wrong”

Updated: Seven denies report Weekend Sunrise host will replace David Koch next January.

Seven has denied a report in the Herald Sun that claims new Weekend Sunrise host Basil Zempilas will succeed David Koch.

An article stated “As of next January Zempalis will inherit David Koch’s weekday role as co-host of Seven’s breakfast program Sunrise. He will partner Samantha Armytage following Koch’s decision to move on.”

But Susan Wood, Head of Publicity at Seven told TV Tonight, “The story in today’s Herald Sun from Jon Anderson is 100% wrong.”

There has been speculation that the Perth-based presenter is being readied for a larger role in the Sunrise family. As TV Tonight first reported, David Koch has confirmed his preference for a 4 day week, largely due to his AFL commitments. But speculation about a full exit remains just that -speculation.

6PR’s Basil Zempilas joined Weekend Sunrise in March following the departure of Andrew O’Keefe.

Update: On 6PR this morning Zempilas indicated he has never had discussions about replacing Koch, only Weekend Sunrise, noting Koch would presumably leave on his own terms given “he is the heart and soul of that show.”

  1. So, I rarely watch morning TV….but having said that…I did see this young man ..on the weekend…forget which day……and I was impressed…I liked his style…..

  2. Nothing against basil but of all the people they have on the east coast, why are they getting someone from Perth to do the job? If the story is true, something funny is going on here

  3. I think it may happen. Whenever Basil or his wife are asked about moving East, they dodge the question. You never know it may be enough for Basil to leave Perth.
