Bill Lawry confirms retirement from Cricket commentary

"I’ve had 40 great years at Channel Nine," says Bill Lawry, "...and I think the time is just right."

Veteran Nine Cricket commentator Bill Lawry has confirmed his retirement after four decades behind the microphone, despite approaches from Seven and Foxtel.

Lawry, 81, has been with Nine for more than 40 years, but said he couldn’t leave his “home.”

“I’ve had 40 great years at Channel Nine,” he told SEN. “I’ve been very, very lucky and I think the time is just right.

“It’s just been such a wonderful journey and I don’t want to spoil the great journey.

“I’ve seen the best cricketers of the last 40 years, I’ve been through the Packers years, I’ve commentate with guys like Ian Healy and Mark Taylor and all the new boys.

“It’s just been a wonderful journey I never really expected.

“I had a phone call or two (from Seven and Foxtel), which is fair enough.

“I said no because Channel Nine has been my home and I’ve been very happy there.

“When you’ve had such an enjoyable trip, and at 81 years of age, I think it’s time to call quits. It’s almost a dream come true.”

  1. He has only been doing the Boxing Day test for the last few years because of his wife’s ill health so no surprise he is fully retiring. (Think he did Sydney as well last year? ) Wonder if the last of the originals, Ian Chappell has been approached? I spent my honeymoon at the Gabba 1975 Aust v West Indies test and loved it ever since. That’s what love does to you haha

  2. Bill has had a remarkable commentary career particularly calling test cricket at the MCG and well and truly deserves a good retirement but I’m glad Channel Nine lost the rights as the broadcasting was getting very old and tiresome on that network. Its long over due for other networks to come in and give cricket broadcasting a fresh makeover and be more in line with the times.

  3. I could never imagine any original “commentary team” members moving across to Seven or Foxtel.

Thanks Bill for your decades of service calling my summers of cricket.

  4. I’ve been thinking Bill was retired apart from doing some home state appearances for a while now, Bill Lawry’s full retirement is now official, with Nine losing cricket it’s not surprising.
