Did Richard Wilkins breach Eurovision jury rule?

Head of the Australian jury chats to Jessica Mauboy, which skates close to a rule about jurors having no connection to the performers.

This morning Today‘s Richard Wilkins, who is head of the Australian Eurovision jury, chatted to Jessica Mauboy about her rehearsal in Lisbon.

Wilkins, who had just viewed the rehearsal joked he had just been in the “secret bunker.” Jurors vote for opposing countries during the rehearsals, but cannot vote for their own.

But is the chat is a breach of the Eurovision rules?:

No member of a National Jury shall be connected in any way with any of the participating songs entered and/or artists performing in the ESC in such a way that they cannot vote in complete independence and impartiality.

SBS told TV Tonight Wilkins’ interview did not impact his ability to vote independently with impartiality.

Mauboy also spoke with Sunrise Live from Lisbon, but withdrew from a chat with ABC News Breakfast.

This morning Virginia Trioli said, “We’re being told she’s tired. She has managed to speak to a few media organises this morning, but too tired to speak to us. Which is an enormous shame. We want her voice to be in great state in order to compete.

“So we wish her well.”

SBS declined to comment.

  1. Is an interviewer “connected” to an interviewee? I wouldn’t have thought so. Plus National Juries can’t vote for their own country. A bit of a long bow I think!
