Actor John Goodman has declined to comment on the axing of Roseanne yesterday, telling Entertainment Tonight, he would “rather say nothing than to cause more trouble.”

Asked about a possible spin-off, Goodman simply said, “You’ve heard more than I have.”

The persistent journo, trying to elicit some kind of reaction mentioned that the axing had also resulted in ABC pulling its Emmy campaign, effectively meaning Goodman was out of the running for the Emmys.

“I wasn’t gonna get an Emmy anyway,” Goodman said. “I’ve been up there 12 times already, and if I didn’t get one I’m not gonna get one.”

Deadline has reported executive producers Tom Werner and Sara Gilbert, the main driving force behind the revival, are expected to meet with some of the series’ writers, led by executive producer / showrunner Bruce Helford, in a few days to kick around possible ideas for continuing the show without Barr.

But the hurdles to overcome would be significant given Barr has a financial interest in the work and retaining staff will be challenged by the need to resolve quickly.

  1. Goodman has always been better in anything other than Roseanne. Even his short guest stint in West Wing was better than the entire nine years of Roseanne.
The lead actress has never been even close to her ensemble players in the acting field. Her obvious cue-card reading and poor timing was always a hindrance to a talented cast doing their best.

  2. Full House has come back focusing on the kids from the old show, who are now adults I’d watch a Roseanne spinoff with Darlene as the central character.

    1. The difference being that the adults are still very involved – usually at least one in most episodes. The issue is that Roseanne is the creator – she owns the intellectual copyright to the characters; and she seems to bitter at the moment to allow anyone else to create a show without her. And she doesn’t seem happy with Sara Gilbert who spoke out against her…

  3. It will be interesting to see if they do create a spin off for the show. I recall reading that when Roseanne was close to being fired in the very early days, Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman both refused to continue the show without her in any way or form. In the re-booted season we are focusing more on Darlene and her family more than Roseanne herself, so the show’s legacy could still live on without Roseanne in it

  4. John Goodman has a long history of not ever saying a bad word about anyone, that goes back at least as far as all the drama surrounding S1.

Fan or not, you have to admit the man is a class act.
