Nine wins Monday in new reality tussle

Ratings: The Voice and MasterChef fight for 7:30, at the expense of House Rules.

It was a Reality reset last night with two returning shows on the mat, proving to be good news for Nine and TEN.

The Voice (949,000) and MasterChef Australia (890,000) were locked in a two-way tussle at the expense of House Rules (607,000). While Sydney & Brissy were locked on Nine, Melbourne & Adelaide Melbourne preferred TEN’s cook-off, and Perth ever-loyal to Seven. Both MasterChef and House Rules returned lower than 2017.

After 9pm Media Watch won its slot with 528,000 viewers, ahead of Roseanne, a Stan Walker special and The Mentor.

Elsewhere Australian Story and Four Corners were both down on last week.

Seven News, ACA and The Chase won their slots.

Nine network won Monday with 28.6% then Seven 26.5%, TEN 20.5%, ABC 16.8% and SBS 7.6%.

Nine News (1.03m / 1.02m) led for Nine then The Voice (949,000), A Current Affair (912,000), Hot Seat (581,000 / 363,000),  Stan Walker: Fight of His Life (397,000). Footy Classified was 105,000 in 3 cities. 100% Footy was 61,000 in 2 cities.

Seven News was #1 with 1.1m / 1.07m for Seven followed by Home and Away (693,000), The Chase (697,000), House Rules (607,000) and The Mentor (369,000).

MasterChef Australia (890,000) was best for TEN followed by The Project (587,000 / 379,000), TEN Eyewitness News (483,000), Roseanne (401,000) and Family Feud (345,000). A Montreal Comedy Festival special was 145,000.

ABC News (749,000), 7:30 (616,000), Australian Story (542,000), Media Watch (528,000), Four Corners (511,000), Q&A (367,000), and Think Tank (238,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was Elizabeth (280,000), 24 Hours in Emergency (219,000), Michael Mosley: Trust Me I’m a Doctor (218,000) and SBS World News (167,000).

    Having plonked that there last year was on May 01st so a week later start this year, still though House Rules sat at mostly the same and it was also after the My Kitchen Rules final last year where it was heavily promoted, so Seven won’t be too bothered I think.

  3. House Rules always starts soft but picks up as The Voice nears its end and ultimately finishes. Im surprised that many people tuned in to Masterchef with MKR having literally just finished.

      1. Absolutely. I hate MKR but love MasterChef. Much better cooks and quality of food, and the focus when in the contestants is about their food dreams and not the bitching

  4. There would be much concern at Seven especially after starting off with such a ” bang ” house makeover that House Rules failed the pressure test premiere slot.
    Very low figures, get set for HR repeats and repeats and repeats – Friday night until midnight no doubt !

    1. Having watched that “bang” house makeover, if they did it again I would hold off watching until the real renos started. It was a cute way to determine the prize money, but really, the contestants had very little to do with it, and it showed nothing of their real talent (or not).

  5. In one episode, the season debut, no less, MasterChef shows how much better it is than the entire season of MKR.
    As an avid cook, both shows have always had a few recipes that I like to try. Except I haven’t seen anything interesting on MKR for at least three years.

  7. If 7 loose Perth with House Rules it will be a disaster for 7 -very poor opening figures
    Expect wall-wall advertising, tears .. drama ………., spin doctors in overdrive today.

  9. Great to see Ten second in the reality battle than the usual distant third. in previous years, House Rules had been a slow build. It usually starts taking #1 when The Voice finishes. I expecting maybe 700K for Masterchef, then both The Voice / House Rules around 850K

    1. Not sure that HR will enjoy a ‘build’ this year as Nine still has The Block and Ninja after The Voice wraps.

      This could prevent viewers becoming invested in the outcome.

  10. MasterChef often debuts softly, as most reality does. 890k is still very good for TEN, and the audience will grow over the weeks.
    Would also be interested to see the catch up numbers.
