SBS

You’re invited to the royal wedding of the year!
Coverage of the royal wedding will air live on Saturday 19 May from 7.30pm AEST on SBS and SBS On Demand.

Breaking social, cultural and racial barriers: what does the royal wedding mean to a modern Australia? SBS presents live coverage from a different perspective.

SBS cordially invites you to celebrate the matrimony of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle, at Windsor Castle in England, live on Saturday, 19 May from 7.30pm AEST on SBS and SBS On Demand.

Marshall Heald, Director of TV and Online Content, SBS, said: “SBS will provide a unique broadcast of what is undoubtedly one of the biggest royal weddings of our era. It will be warm, funny and intelligent, whilst examining issues this wedding raises, including cross-cultural marriages, the republican debate and what these issues mean for Australians.

“We know audiences want more than just commentary of the royal wedding and SBS will provide a place for that conversation. By bringing diverse and prominent Australians together in a live studio before the wedding begins, Royal Wedding Live will be an opportunity for us to explore the royal wedding in a unique SBS way which will give audiences a deeper insight.”

Fresh from Eurovision, TV and radio presenter Myf Warhurst and comedian Joel Creasey will team up with legendary journalist Ray Martin at SBS Artarmon HQ for RoyalWedding Live.

It has been reported that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle started dating in 2016 – and the couple have been creating headlines ever since. Their relationship has broken social, cultural and racial barriers – busting traditional norms of the British Monarchy and creating worldwide interest and conversation.

Filmed in front of a live studio audience, SBS’s Royal Wedding Live will begin at 7.30pm AEST and will include the big event itself. Hosts Myf, Joel and Ray will talk to a diverse line-up of guests to discuss what this wedding means to a modern, multicultural Australia. The panel will speak about a range of topical issues, plus they’ll chat to a royalist and republican about Monarchies across other continents and how they all stack up against the British. The trio will also delve into the royal wedding fashion including the bride’s gown and how it compares to other countries’ royal traditions.

With packages from The Feed’s Jan Fran, as well as SBS News European correspondent Ben Lewis reporting live from Windsor, SBS will provide distinctive coverage of this milestone global event that is steeped in tradition. Audiences at home will also be encouraged to have their say with live social television throughout the broadcast using the hashtag #royalwedding.

Myf Warhurst said: “Everyone loves a wedding and this one comes with a bonus – it’s an historic cultural moment! Harry and Meghan are walking in the footsteps of Princess Diana who not only pushed social and cultural norms, she set the precedent for outsiders marrying into the monarchy. Now we get to celebrate this and herald a new era for the royal family. With added frocks, and champagne. Hurrah!”

Ray Martin said: “Royal events are always spectacular – especially births, deaths and marriages. So along with the pageantry, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what the rich royaltraditions mean to us – and our national identity. SBS is the perfect place to do it – with respect and hopefully a bit of joy, even fun.”

Joel Creasey said: “Full disclosure, I’m a huge Harry fan (both Styles and the Prince) and I love that he has casually overlooked traditional norms and followed his heart – someone who happens to be an American Hollywood star. What is more fab than that?”

‘Royal Wedding Live’ will air live Saturday, 19 May from 7.30pm AEST on SBS and SBS On Demand.

‘Royal Wedding Live’ is produced for SBS by Blink TV.

Britain’s Royal Weddings (Wednesday 16th May & Thursday 17th May at 8.30pm) – The intimate story of Britain’s royal weddings, from the Queen Mother through to Princess Margaret, told from the point of view of the people who were there. Sophie Raworth discovers how traditions began, how weddings adapted to reflect the changing times, and what it is like to be part of staging an event that is watched by millions. It also charts how changing social attitudes and national circumstances have influenced what the public has come to expect from Britain’s royal weddings.

Our Queen (Wednesday 16th May & Thursday 17th May at 9.45pm) – An in-depth portrait of the world’s most famous woman by award winning producer/director Michael Waldman and bestselling royal writer Robert Hardman. Our Queen charts an extraordinary year in the life of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, with unique access to her family, to her staff, to her prime ministers and to her palaces. A world leader since the age of 25, how does she retain her hold on the nation’s affections when political and social currents have transformed so much around her? How does she stay true to the past, yet adapt to the present? This fascinating, observational documentary series is a study of leadership, judgement and character, of spectacular pageantry but also of great warmth and poignancy as it shows what this truly modern monarch means to Britain and the world.

Prince Harry in Africa (Friday 18th May at 8.30pm) – follows HRH Prince Harry on his return to Lesotho, in Africa, to continue the work of the charity he set up in the country a decade ago.

Featuring footage of Prince Harry getting his hands dirty and interacting with the local children, the film will discover how the Prince has come to have such an understanding of their problems and how this led him to set up his own initiative, with the aim of supporting orphans and vulnerable children and helping them through education.

The documentary will also capture the moment that Prince Harry is reunited with Mutsu, a local teenager who the Prince met on his first visit to Lesotho, and who have kept in regular contact, both knowing first-hand what is was like growing up without a parent.

Born to Royalty (Friday 18th May at 9.30pm) – a feature-length celebration charting the history of the royal babies born in recent times. In this insightful documentary, we celebrate the birth of William and Kate’s first child, the great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II, with a fascinating portrait of the life that lies ahead for the child who is born to reign.

  1. Hello David,

This subject maybe be old news now, but I was wondering if you could provide a list as to what channel is using what originating broadcaster from London?

For example, this comprehensive guide only indicates Channel 7 as using ITV and Foxtel using BBC. I was planning on watching Foxtel (UKTV) but have sadly discovered that this channel is only standard definition, I was keen to know if the BBC broadcast is going to be used on any of the other free to air channels?

    1. I don’t have that info, but given FTA is in HD then they may be your preferred option. In these cases it is usually pooled vision in terms of shots etc, so it will probably be the commentary that differs.

  2. Totally and absolutely over the top all this. My main interest will be picking out which one of our media brigade will make fools of themselves which invariably happens from one or two when reporting from overseas in such numbers. Karl Stefanovic would be my top pick and Annabelle Crabbe judging by some of her Fairfax articles comes across as something of an Anglophobe. We’ll see.

  3. How to chose which channel to watch? Probably agree with Maev – ABC. Royal Wedding nights tend to be very quiet out – if you’re not into the wedding, perhaps a great night to go out when it’s not so busy!

Ratings on Sunday will be interesting!

  4. Seriously ?!?…..They have gone hunting for anything and everything remotely Royal…. 😀
Poor you David Knox….. I will watch the wedding…and it will be the ABC….. the rest…pffftt.
