Seven’s Royal Wedding tops ratings, wins another week.

Ratings: Key creative decision by Seven saw it claim victory on Sunday, and another week under its belt.

Congrats to Seven for romping it home in the Royal Wedding ratings battle, with 1.95m viewers choosing Melissa Doyle, Michael Usher & Royal expert Angela Rippon. That was higher than William & Kate’s 2011 wedding at 1.74m.

Nine drew 1.48m viewers with Karl Stefanovic & Georgie Gardner, on par with 2011’s 1.47m. ABC’s Annabel Crabb & Jeremy Fernandez had to settle for 506,000 – a disappointing result given it drew 1.1m for William & Kate’s nuptials.

But Seven’s atmospheric backdrop and a decision to broadcast from 4pm saw it lead the broadcast from beginning to end. Seven pulled 629,000 in the afternoon while Nine stuck with Getaway on just 333,000.

SBS, which attempted a lighter alternative was just 129,000. TEN, which stuck with normal programming, has possibly drawn an all-time low for a commercial network.

Seven won the week once more.

  1. I recorded ABC,9 and SBS but not Seven for no particular reason. I thought they all did a good job, The highlight for me was Welsh soprano Elin Thomas accompanied by orchestra singing Handels ‘Eternal source of light divine’ as Megan entered the chapel. Very moving.

  2. I started to watch ‘the’ wedding on ABC….nah….briefly to Seven…then went to TEN daily web page…they were streaming BBC and it was awesome…hands down the winner ….
    I was also watching Ambulance, live…2nd screen…

  3. Melissa Doyle and Michael Ussher were really good to watch. They were a great duo and ready made to do all the big stuff. Wonder if 9 still think Karl is worth the money they pay him.

    1. I haven’t added them up but it isn’t so simple. Harry & Meghan averaged higher but William & Kate was a Friday against AFL. In 2011 audiences were also less fragmented than they are now. The fact they are so close is what’s most remarkable.

  4. I don’t know why Ten didn’t just use CBS’s coverage, with a bit of Lisa. I don’t know why anyone who would normally watch Ambulance Not want to watch the wedding. CNN coverage was great!

  5. Dream result for Seven. Bit of an insult to Nine given most Australians previously used to turn to them for big event coverage. Melissa Doyle and Michael Usher should be used more.

    1. uktv (BBC feed) was great. But I had the tv sound down listening to Kate, Tim, and Marty audio stream, banging on about how many cigarettes and pints the poms consume…
