Former Melbourne journalist and news presenter Charles Slade, best known for TEN News and Nine News, has died.
Slade enjoyed a career in aviation, before moving to media in the early 1980s at Fox FM.
He joined TEN Eyewitness News thereafter, supporting the presenting team in 1981 alongside the likes of David Johnston, Jana Wendt and Jo Pearson, plus reporting for Good Morning Australia.
After leaving TEN he moved to ABC to host its weekly Sports Arena program, before joining National Nine News in 1994 where he remained for ten years.
We’d like to take a moment to remember a former popular colleague here at #9News: Senior reporter, Charles Slade. #9News pic.twitter.com/a2DC38nq8D

Many in Melbourne TV news circles paid tribute to him on social media:
Vale Charles Slade. One of the great TV reporters in the @tennewsmelb heyday. A true gentleman. This is a photo of the old news team circa 1987. pic.twitter.com/LthUli73Gl

Charles Slade was all class. As a junior reporter, it was people like him I tried to emulate. Saddened to hear this news. https://t.co/VxqkU3zEud

Greatly saddened to hear of the passing of former @9NewsMelb journo Charles Slade. Spent many days together on the road. A gifted reporter, wry, dry, and always a gentleman. RIP mate.

Vale Charles Slade. A brilliant reporter, and a gentleman. I learned so much from watching him. Working with him left me perpetually star struck. One of the best. My thoughts are with his family. @9NewsMelb

Charles Slade has a great style and really knew how to tell a story. We learned a lot about making top TV news from watching him

Was saddened to read about Charles Slade's passing this morning, just on a personal note, in particular for his son Nick, who's one of the most genuine people I've met through sports media. Thoughts with Nick and their family

Yes it was wrong. The Melbourne Age (which should get it right) says 70. Always best to double check these things.
Came across as a very decent bloke; he was only 50, far too early to go. RIP Charles.
I don’t think 50 is correct.
The Age obituary said he was 70. Vale.
Worked with Charles on many sports programs at the ABC. I always enjoyed his company as he was so professional and such a gentleman who will be sadly missed.
