Vale: Margot Kidder

Canadian-born film & TV actress, best known for playing Lois Lane in the Superman films, has died.

Canadian-born actress Margot Kidder, best known for playing Lois Lane in the Superman films, has died aged 69.

She died at her home in Montana, but the cause of death was not given.

Kidder appeared in more than 70 movies and TV shows, the most famous being Lois Lane in 1978’s Superman, exuding on-screen chemistry with star Christopher Reeve. She reprised the role again in Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987).

Other film credits included The Great Waldo Pepper, The Amityville Horror, The Pornographer, Mob Story and Crime and Punishment.

TV credits included Smallville, The L Word, RL Stine’s The Haunting Hour, The Outer Limits, Law and Order: SVU, Amazon, Touched by an Angel, Boston Common, Burke’s Law, Murder She Wrote, Le Femme Nikita, Tales from the Crypt, Barnaby Jones, Mod Squad, McQueen and Brothers & Sisters.

But Kidder’s life was also dogged with personal tragedies, including a car accident in 1990 that left her badly in debt, confined her to a wheelchair for most of two years and which worsened the mental illness she had struggled with for much of her life.

In 1996 she suffered a mental health breakdown, and in a highly-publicised episode, she disappeared for four days, found dazed in a yard not far from the studio where she once filmed parts of Superman.

She was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Speaking about her struggles with mental health in 2012 she said, “I feel very lucky that I got the kind of help that I did. And it was sheer luck, it certainly wasn’t any brilliance of mine. I got people who didn’t insist I got drugged to the gills with a lot of mind numbing things that basically turn you into a vegetable. [They] taught me how to get better naturally. So I feel really, really, really blessed by that.”
