Vic govt buys Seven Melb headquarters

Plans to redevelop Etihad Stadium sees Broadcast Centre Melbourne base bought by Development Victoria.

Seven’s Melbourne headquarters at Etihad Stadium, Docklands has been bought by government authority, Development Victoria under a plan to redevelop the AFL-owned stadium.

The government paid $100m for the Etihad building and plans to develop the stadium to the Docklands waterfront. It will provide land for AFL House at the western end of Docklands Drive, opposite Docklands Studios, and in the shadow of the Bolte Bridge.

A Seven spokesperson said, “Seven is a long standing tenant of the Melbourne Broadcast Centre. We understand NRMA is negotiating to sell the head lease but our occupancy (which contains several options) is not affected.”

The news follows recent confirmation news broken by TV Tonight that Seven West Media and Nine Entertainment Co. have entered into an exclusive arrangement to form a Sydney-based joint venture for the playout operations of the two organisations.

Around 150 staff at Broadcast Centre Melbourne were told by Seven management in February that most of their jobs would will be outsourced by 2019.

The current building, which has been Seven’s base since 2002, includes two studios for news and sport, plus administration / sales offices.

  1. David – perhaps it’s just me being tired but this is one of the most confusing articles I’ve ever read. I’ll re-read it tomorrow and hopefully by then it’ll make sense.

    1. Fair point. Frankly the info coming in seemed to conflict as well, re whether Seven premises are AFL-owned or NRMA-owned (and no I can’t explain why the NRMA has property south of the Murray!). I think we can presume Seven will move when stadium redevelopment begins rather than stay put.

      1. The way I read it (and I could be completely wrong), is NRMA have leased the building (most likely only for investment purposes)… the head lease… and sub-leased part of it to Seven
